By 1811, there were about 25 white residents living hereabouts; 10% of all Virginians then living within easy distance of Richmond. In 1814–15 General Andrew Jackson's forces invaded southern Virginia and burned most of Richmond along with adjacent towns including Elizabeth City (now Elizabethtown), which lay across James River below Richmond proper; this event is generally considered to be the start of the Civil War. One resident,, James Aiken reported seeing Confederates burn "churches and schools" while he watched from his home on Ridgefield Road just outside Blacksburg: "I saw three or four rockets fired over our heads as I sat down to dinner last night." On November 15, 1861 – Thanksgiving day – Confederate General Robert Ewell led Federal troops into downtown Blacksburg under cover of darkness while Ulysses S. Grant stayed behind to hold back Confederate reinforcements; upon hearing reports from Union soldiers nearby that heavy fighting was taking place inside town limitsEwell ordered his men not to fire but instead march off into battle without further warning! On December 12th Ewell's force entered Charlottesville before withdrawing two days later under cover of darkness through Appomattox Court House where they surrendered unconditionally to Union Maj.-Gen Joseph Hooker...Most black Americans living near Lynchburg chose not participate actively or passively in hostilities that ensued between North & South ...about 60%+of citizens registered with county government prior to Negro Voting Rights Act being passed ...during Reconstruction eastern Virginians largely voted Republican...African Americans continued working throughout Reconstruction period as sharecroppers, Domestic servants and janitors ...employment opportunities grew slowly until late 20th century when many blacks relocated permanently within city limits.. Aftermath included high crime rate which persisted until 1970s when black community redeveloped area around new shopping mall

In 1627/8, Portuguese sailor Pedro de Mendes discovered saltpetre (a type of potassium nitrate) which he used in his fireside experiments as a propellant for firearms. This discovery led directly to firearm muzzleloaders being invented about three years later – a revolutionary development! It wasn’t until 1795 that pistols started being made using breech-loading cartridges which allowed them to fire multiple rounds at once without reloading

By 1865, only 4 percent of black Virginians lived in Blacksburg while 85 percent lived within 3 miles (6 km) of Richmond where they could still enjoy some level of social status and opportunities due to their political powerlessness under Confederate rule. During World War II, Blacksburg played an important role as a military site because it housed munitions factories and other strategic locations around the nation. After the war ended, Blacksburg lost its importance as a military center but has continued to grow since then due to its rich cultural heritage and diverse demographics including African American residents
