In 1871, American freedmen began arriving here following Reconstruction and beginning to labor on plantations owned by white families until they were free en masse on April 12,1875. Since then, Blacksburg has seen steady growth with more than 4500 residents now making their home here - many coming from surrounding counties such as Loudoun and Fairfax due to strong economic opportunities available hereabouts.
