Blacksburg, Virginia is home to the oldest continuously functioning firearms factory in the United States. The site was first used by Colonel Samuel Colt in 1845 to make his new revolver, the .36 caliber Colt Peacemaker. The facility continued production of firearms until it closed in 1964. Today, the building is used as a museum and historical research center. The Blackstocks Gun Manufacturing Company was founded in Blacksburg in 1857 by James W. Barnes and John Dickson White. Many of Blackstocks' products were exported to countries such as Spain, Italy, Russia, and China. The company produced rifles, shotguns, pistols, revolvers and other firearms until 1951. In that year, Blackstock merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company. Today Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation operates blackstocks manufacturing facilities across the country including one located in Blacksburg.
