Blacksburg is a town in Virginia, United States. The population was 23,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Loudoun County and part of the larger Northern Virginia metropolitan area. Blacksburg is home to Westover School, one of four public schools in Loudoun County. The first bullets were fired from guns dating back to 1777 in what is now Blacksburg. In 1814, General James Longstreet's army fought a battle at Bunker Hill which resulted in the capture of 5 prisoners by British troops including Major John Brown who later killed himself while being transported back to England. In 1847, Confederate General Robert Ewell surrendered at Appomattox Court House after two days of fighting and was brought into custody with his sword held high over his head as an example to other Confederate commanders. In 1865 during the American Civil War, Union General Ulysses S. Grant successfully defended Petersburg against an attack by Confederate General Robert Ewell's force led by Colonel Joseph Hooker; this victory earned Grant the nickname "The Butcher" due to his ruthless tactics during that war. On July 10th 1861 Blacksburg also saw its first shooting match when ten militiamen from nearby Fairfax arrived for a rifle competition organized by Captain John Gillett (later Commandant) of Company K, 4th Regiment Norfolk Militia on land leased from local landowners named Carter and Richards near present day Burkett Road and Main Street.. The rifle competition was won by Private George Laddington from Company K (4th Regiment) Norfolk Militia who shot three rounds off an old muzzleloader called 'Old Jeff'. As it turned out this was not only the first time firearms had been used in warfare but also one of earliest documented instances where different types of munitions were used together- rifles firing buckand-bunny rounds through cumbersome breech loading shotguns which required long barrels/stocks and therefore more stability when firing live rounds.. This event set off many more such competitions throughout the Confederacy as troops began exchanging fire with muskets rather than just using pistols or knives

It is the largest city in Prince William County and the second-largest city in Virginia after Norfolk. Blacksburg's nickname "The Hub" refers to its location as one of the primary nodes of activity for both agricultural and industrial production within the Commonwealth of Virginia. Blacksburg has been called "the cultural capital of America" by several publications, including The New York Times and Smithsonian magazine. The first English settlement in what is now Prince William County was made by John Smith on July 4, 1607 when he founded Jamestown on Roanoke Island; however, it failed due to lack of food and water supplies. A few weeks later, Smith's group landed on what is now known as Point Lookout and built a small fort there to await reinforcements from England. In 1619, English colonists James Montresor and Sir Thomas Fairfax sent out two companies under Captaine Christopher Newport with orders to explore the area surrounding Jamestown before returning with news that there was no land available suitable for Colony growth beyond some areas around Danville (now Norfolk). As part of their exploration efforts they discovered a natural bay on Roanoke Island which became known as Powhatan Bay because of its resemblance to Powhatan himself (a native chief from Tidewater Virginia). Upon return report from Newport his captains recommended that another colony be established near this newly discovered bay - this time at present day Blacksburg; however, it was not until 1626 that steps were taken to establish such an outpost here at present day Blacksburg when General Sir George Monck purchased 700 acres (2 km²) along Roanoke Sound from tobacco farmer Sir John Carter for £50 sterling ($75 U.S.) With new technology advancements during World War II such as radar equipment developed at nearby Roycroft Army Airfield weather observers observations could be made regarding enemy aircraft activities over American soil; thus providing valuable information used in strategic bombing campaigns over Japan which led directly to victory over Japan during World War II One thing that makes Blacksburg stand out above other communities throughout America is its diversity: From its large percentage of African Americans who formed very early majorities among all racial groups here through various waves of immigration since Confederation in 1776 right up until recent times where Hispanics/Latinos have become increasingly numerous & significant - making up almost 10% or more overall residents according to estimates - Blacksburg has never ceased being an open-minded place where everyone feels welcome regardless of their background or race

Blacksburg is located in central Virginia within the Appalachian Mountains on the banks of the upper James River. The first English settlers in what is now Albemarle County arrived in 1607 and built a small cabin on an island near present-day Blacksburg. In 1619, Sir George Washington's force destroyed Fort Richelieu on the James River to prevent French forces from establishing a base of operations against British interests along that river corridor. The site of today's Blackburg was chosen as its new capital because it had long been a center for agriculture and trade with Native Americans living along both sides of the mountains. In 1776, during America's Revolutionary War, Blacksburg opposed British efforts to take over North Carolina by invading that state from behind (the North American Invasion). On July 8, 1776, General Cornwallis' army attempted to cross into Kentucky under cover of darkness while troops carrying cannons remained hidden inside Mount Vernon Castle; they were detected by Blacksburg militia and quickly routed before reaching their destination. The townspeople responded promptly to news of Patriot casualties by raising money and enlisting soldiers from surrounding counties to march on Charlottesville to help defend their home city against British occupation forces led by General Howe. As part of this effort, blacks labored tirelessly day and nightDigging ditches for munitions storage near present-day White Sulphur Springs; loading artillery onto wagons for transport through mountainous terrain; preparing hayricks for defense against possible Indian raids; setting up flagpoles atop trees near present-day campus buildings; building roadsides fortifications with earth walls around houses; constructing hospitals – including one where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., then an uneducated slaveholder working as a personal physician forVirginia Governor Thomas Jefferson, rendered medical services during his integration activism later in life –and overall leading various aspects of local resistance against white supremacy while avoiding open violence or engaging in direct combat with British troops."
