The University of California at Berkeley operated Observatory No. 2 which was located on land that is now known as Mount Wilson National Park. This observatory was used both for observing stars and for conducting research on space phenomena such as cometary tails and stellar atmospheres. In 1938, Observatory No. 1 was destroyed in a bombing raid during World War II which left behind a number of scientific artifacts including some of America’s first television sets used for astronomy studies! In 1951, Arlington became home to another major astronomical observatory when Telescope Hill was constructed on top of Mount Weather (nowMount Whitney). This observatory was used primarily for studying stars near Earth while Telescope Hill remained operational until 1973!
