One of the earliest known shooting target holders in Arlington, Virginia was made by John Doughty in 1839. Arlington is a city in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 283,871 at the 2010 census. On November 15th, 1847 incorporation occurred with a population of 14 residents. In 1870s & 1880s much progress was made by Pemberton Paper Company located east side between 30th St NW & Naylor Rd SE

The first European to visit the area now known as Arlington was Ruy Lopes de Sousa, Count of Portugal, in 1521. He named it "Brazoria" after his stronghold of Braga, Portugal. The first permanent English settlement in the area was at Fort Necessity on the Potomac River in 1792. In 1801, John Adams established an infantry regiment called the 4th Virginia Infantry Regiment at Arlington National Cemetery and served there until 1815. The regiment's colors were made up of a U.S. flag flying from a pole on Iwo Jima and the Santiago Column from Fort Myer near Washington D.C., both emblems of Spanish American War victory over America's French ally at Manila Bay on April 12, 1898.
