Arlington, Virginia is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia. It was founded in 1775 by Lt. Colonel George Washington as an agricultural and military outpost on the Rappahannock River near modern-day Arlington Cemetery. The town grew rapidly due to its location, position on the Potomac River, and access to Chesapeake Bay. In 1871 it became an incorporated city under the name of McLean. Arlington's growth continued through World War II until its destruction in 1945 by Japan after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. After the war, Arlington experienced rapid growth as a bedroom community for Washington D.C., although some residents still commute to work in nearby Alexandria or Prince George's County. The population was estimated at 400,000 by 2000; however, recent census data show that this number has declined significantly since then (see below). The first settler in what is now Arlington was Capt Richard Roe who arrived with his family from Norfolk Island in 1775. He built a house on land owned by Colonel John Smith and sold it to General Edward Braddock for £200 in March 1776. In December 1776 Lieutenant Colonel George Washington came across Roe’s farm while marching south from Loudoun Valley towards Fairfax Court House when he discovered four houses burned down by Indian scouts near what is now Kenedy Creek Road (now part of Winchester Avenue).
