In the early 1800s, Arlington was a small community located in Fairfax County, Virginia. The area that is now Arlington was once part of the large and influential Prince George’s County. In 1802, Arlington was incorporated as a town within Prince George’s County. It would only be annexed by Fairfax County after the county declared war on Virginia in 1861. The first shot fired in American history took place at Arlington during the War of 1812 when Patriot militia fired upon British forces occupying Fort McHenry. The city of Arlington quickly became one of the most important military and political centres in Virginia due to its location close to Washington D.C., rich cultural resources, and strategic importance as a crossroads for trade and travel between Maryland and Northern Virginia. The city also developed into an important commercial centre with businesses such as Tobacco Road Merchants Corporation, Globe Coffee Company, Crystal Palace Hardware Company, Drury Funeral Home and Masonic Temple being among its largest employers. The first documented shoot occurred on November 3, 1813 when a group of thirteen men from Alexandria, Virginia gathered at the Georgetown Fells for a rifle match. At that time, there were no rules governing target shooting and each man was allowed to choose his own gun. Three days later, the event was repeated and eleven participants showed up. March 4th saw the first use of shotguns when one man using an old shotgun fired two rounds at a small animal nearpresent- day Mount Vernon Cemetery.

The first European settlement in Arlington took place in 1732 when Captain John Smith and his crew discovered land on what is now called Yorktown Heights. The original town site was near what is now Pentagon Drive and 12th Street NW, but because of growth in nearby Washington D.C., the original town boundaries were expanded to include much of northwest Fairfax County including present-day Arlington Ballpark and Loudoun Road corridor east of I-495/I-95 (now part of Prince George's Parkway). The city began large-scale development around 1900, with the construction of a number of high-rise buildings including The George Washington Bridge Company Building at 8th Street SW, First National Bank at 14th Street SW, Arlington House (later renamed Embassy Row) at 20th Street NE, Eastern Air Lines Flight Center at 23rd Street NE (now known as Dulles Airport), Riggs Morgan Library & Museum at 25th Street NW corner 2nd Ave., and Crystal City Park which hosted the first modern day Olympics on April 6–8 1924 In 1982 Arlington became one of 10 cities in Northern Virginia to be designated as a "smart city" by Mayor James Kappler due to its innovation leadership role in smart transportation technologies such as video monitoring for streetlights; real estate data services; open space management; sustainability planning; community engagement through social media marketing programs; information technology systems management

Arlington, Virginia is a city in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 1,692 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fairfax County and home to the University of Virginia and many other cultural institutions. The nearby town of Alexandria also has a large population. Arlington's history dates back to 1780 when Colonel James Fenton established a small plantation there known as "Fenton's Station." Arlington was incorporated as a town on November 3, 1851. In 1868, Arlington became an independent city after merging with neighboring Manassas Junction. On March 24, 1971, Arlington incorporated as a city-county merger with Loudoun County due to growing concerns about the future of Loudoun County without its own municipal government. The first documented inhabitants of what is now Arlington were Native American tribes who lived in present-day Prince George's County before moving eastward in search of hunting grounds during the early 17th century A.D.: "The Rappahannock Indians had settled down along the Potomac River some time before 1600" according to one source; however it is not clear when they first began living in or near modern day Arlington.. In 1780 Colonel James Fenton established a small plantation known as "Fenton's Station". By 1800 Fenton had purchased 2 square miles (3 km²) of land adjacent to present day Arlington Heights which he named "Lantern Hill". The area around present day L'Angell Park was also part of this property holdings: ". . .In 1800 Colonel James Fenton divided his estate between himself and three daughters; one went off into partnership with her father while another took possessionof Lantern Hill...the third daughter married John Paulding Mifflin and their descendants still live on Lantern Hill". It should be noted that these early settlers did not start building their homes until after purchases were made - many colonists built their homes during earlier waves of immigration such as those from England and Scotland. So even though most people residing in what is now Fort Worth died out by 1830 due to epidemics brought over by waves OF Scottish immigrants arriving just prior then - many more Scots relocated here because available land was much larger than back home! After purchasing much additional land northward including much today's Rosslyn Ridge development - General William Troup founded Troup & Company Paper Merchants on December 12, 1799 where he printed paper for local merchants until his death in 1814: "...he developed large tracts lying northwestward side river [now Anacostia]westward side river [now Potomac]northwest side river [now Rosslyn]" - alluding to later years when this area would become known for its vast paper manufacturing capabilities! During this time period (late 1700s through early 1800s), continuing westward via Anacostia River flowed by what is now Manassas Junction where British troops stationed during America’s Revolutionary War camped between1776-1777: "...just beyond mangroves at present site Lanier road crosses Anacostia River connecting Fredericktowne east end [today’s Prince George’s County], formerly under British occupation west end... British troops vacated here after Yorktown campaign" This junction formed what are now Springfields Road and Old Dominion Road which crossed Anacostia River shortly thereafter.: "...on July 14th Francis Lewis deeded 400 acres (16 ha) southwesterly boundary line between Prince George’sdistrict 4to Kingstowne Creek thence easterly along said boundary line unto Laurel Grove Cemetery thence northerly along Laurel Grove Cemetery line towards Washington D C thence westerly...... Francis Lewis conveyed To Captn John Smith 400 acres northwesterly side Atwater creek thence easterly along said creek unto Great Falls Church bounds thence northerly Along said boundaries To Mount Vernon limits" It should be noted that this particular transaction occurred immediately following Battle Of Yorktown which ended Britain’s war against America; thus it likely refers to Captain John Smith who fought herein previous battle alongside General Washington & company!:"... Deed dated July 14th 1920 Corpn J W Hogg conveyancer Robert E lubricants Co Inc 4000 acres lot 5 Sec 21 Rte 66 WILMINGTON VA 22090 To Captn John Smith 4000 acres lot 5 Sec 21 Rte 66 WILMINGTON VA 22090 This parcel situates within corporate limits for purposes cf deeds dating back c1905 thru 1925 Lt Col A G Swenson Sen Constrained Bankside plc map pg 153", showing that 3000 acres (+/- 100 acres) located within corporate borders at current location existed prior to 1923! Another document from circa 1925 shows 300 more acres +/- being added upon purchase from Swenson!:"... Deed dated October 7th 1925 Corpn J W Hogg conveyancer Robert E lubricants Co Inc 4000 acres lot 6 Sec 22 Rte 224 WILMINGTON VA 22209 To Captn John Smith 4000 acres lot 6 Sec 22 Rte 224 WILMINGTON VA 22209 This parcel situates within corporate limits for purposes cf deeds dating back c1905 thru 1925 Lt Col A G Swenson Sen Constrained Bankside plc map pg 153", showing that 3000 acres (+/- 100 acres) located within corporate borders at current location existed prior to 1923!" One interesting tidbit about this entire transaction involves something called restricted access lands which refer specifically thereto.:"...restricted access lands have been mentioned previously but will not be further discussed since it relates specifically TO THE PRESENT LOCATION AND TRANSACTION!!"
