The first people to live in what is now Arlington were some of the original wave of English colonists who arrived in North America during the late 16th century. When Americans began organizing their country into states in 1776, they established governments at points along the Potomac River including Cambridge (now Washington), Frederick (now Annandale), and Harpers Ferry (now Lexington). This left little opportunity for settlement near where I-95 now intersects Interstate 95, so developers started looking for land on which to build roads and businesses. One such developer was James Whitcomb Riley Sr., who purchased 1,824 acres (730 hectares) north of present-day Arlington east of I-95 from George Washington on November 15, 1858 for $10 per acre ($1/km²). He named his new town "Richmond" after himself but changed it two years later to Arlington because he wanted residents to know they were not alone in trying to improve their community. In November 1861 John Marshall wrote Congress urging them to appropriate money "for erecting a road through said [Arlington] parish towards Centreville...to connect with said road at Fredericksburg" – an effort by Marshall to encourage more settlers into his new community rather than moving closer to Richmond which was still under Confederate control at that time. The General Assembly appropriated $5200 for this purpose on December 3rd 1861; however due to rising tensions over southern secession this request did not result in any progress being made towards creating a road through Arlington until 1862 when Speaker John Atherton petitioned Congress again requesting funds for this purpose – this time successful! On February 8th 1862 President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order No.–87 – also known as Executive Order Emancipation Proclamation – which ordered all slaves within Confederate lines free unconditionally! This event marks one step forward for American emancipation efforts although much more remainedTo achieve full freedom these men had To leave their homes behind and go thru difficult journey's many died while doing so
The area that is now Arlington, Virginia was first settled by the Powhatan people in the late 17th century. The area became part of Virginia Colony in 1676 and then a part of the United States of America in 1781. The town of Arlington was founded in 1802, and it became a county seat of Fairfax County in 1847. The city of Arlington was founded in 1907 and it became a metropolitan borough in 1966.
