Arlington, Virginia is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia. It was founded in 1777 by English colonists as Fredericktown and became part of the United States of America in 1789. Grant ordered Union troops to burn down Arlington while they were retreating due to this event being seen as a betrayal by many Virginians—including some who had supported him during the war.—The burning caused $100 million in damage (four times what it would cost to repair it) and made Arlington one of the most impoverished cities in America.—After Reconstruction ended in 1865, Arlington reverted back to its pre-Union status as a small town with high levels of poverty and crime.—In 1900–1901, President William McKinley designated Arlington Heights as his presidential home because he felt that it offered views similar to those enjoyed by his predecessor James K.
