Arlington, Virginia is home to the National Rifle Association (NRA) and has a rich history with guns. The city was founded in 1775 by British colonists as part of the Province of Virginia. In 1871, Arlington became part of what is now Arlington County, Virginia. The first gun lock company in Arlington was Lock & Key, Inc., which operated from 1895-1898. From 1898-1901, the locksmith John Fenton began manufacturing gun locks at his business, Fenton Locksmiths. In 1901-1902, George Washington acquired a handgun and ammunition store in downtown Arlington and began using Fenton locks for firearms storage. From 1944-1945, NRA member Franklin J. Smith ran NRA's Gunsmiths Department during World War II while also working at FN America as an arms inspector and testing range manager. Smith later served as president of FN America from 1966-1970; during this time he promotedFN American's efforts to become a leading firearms manufacturer worldwide After World War II ended on September 2nd 1945, gun control laws were changed in the U.S.; this change led to increased demand for gun locks because of new regulations regarding firearms ownership and use . In 1948-1949 Norman Ellsworth developed an improved type of gun lock known as "Touchstone" that could be opened with just one finger – this made it much more difficult for unauthorized individuals to steal or misuse pistols . By 1951 Touchstone had been replaced by another product called "Tower" which could only be opened with a key fob . That same year Richard Molnar started makinggun safes out of heavy steel plates that could be locked with either one or two keys . By 1953 Tower had been replaced by another product called "Surge". These new Safeties were designed specifically for handguns (.22LR rifles only) and could only be opened with a key fob or mastercard card reader The years following 1949 saw an increase in shootings throughout the U.S.; this increase was due largely to crime rates rising along with technological advances such as television commercials promoting concealed carry privileges In 1975 Parker Hannifin Corporation created their own line of handgun safes named after then President Gerald Ford – thesesafes were designed especially for law enforcement officers who wanted added security when taking handguns into custody By 1984 all production operations ceased at L&L Pistol Sales Ltd., although some parts/products remain available through distributors today
