Arlington, Virginia is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 34,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–D.C. Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located within the Northern Virginia suburbs of Washington D.C.. Arlington was founded on April 17, 1784 by Rear Admiral John Adams as an outpost on the north bank of Potomac River in what is now Arlington Heights. In 1814, Arlington became an independent parish and retains its own government today with a mayor and council-manager form of government. The town's name comes from two properties it owns on Mount Vernon Street: Arlington Heights and King's Chapel which had been used by Rear Admiral John Adams for his home until he moved to Congress House in 1800 where he resided until his death four years later. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell decided to move his army into Alexandria because it would be less difficult for him to supply his forces there than at Richmond due to Union Army efforts to blockade Petersburg Peninsula logistics routes supplying Confederate forces inside Virginia Beach peninsula; however this decision ultimately failed when Confederate General James Longstreet destroyed many bridges over the Potomac River before crossing it near Manassas Junction; as a result, Alexandria instead fell back into rebel hands after Ewell's retreat from that area on September 11th 1861 while artillery fire from Fort Monroe protected Fairfax County residents living close to Yorktown Battlefield who were safe from enemy shelling during the battle that day between Union troops under Ulysses S Grant (1865) and Confederate troops led by Robert Ewell (1862). In 1881, Arlington Highlands was annexed into Arlington proper; although some houses still stand within the old limits of both towns as well as closer neighborhoods like Ballston Lake or Herndon Roads south of Interstate 95 east of Chain Bridge Road but these are considered historical landmarks rather than part of present-day Arlington.
