The first European settlement in what is now Arlington was by Captain John Smith in 1607. In 1792, during the American Revolution, General George Washington's army camped here while they besieged Richmond, Virginia. Arlington became an independent municipality on February 14, 1871 when it seceded from Fairfax County to become its own entity. The name "Arlington" comes from two Anglo-Saxon place names - Haltoun meaning 'hollow' and Urbisan meaning 'city'. The original core of Arlington consisted of land that abutted present-day Alexandria on three sides - Southbound I-495 (now called Friendship Avenue), Eastbound I-395 (now called Massachusetts Avenue), and Westbound I-66 (now called Lee Highway). This area formed part of Prince Frederick's County until 1821 when it was split between Fairfax and Culpeper Counties following the admission of Alexandria as a town within Fairfax County. In 1881, Arlington annexing several acres east of Interstate 95 to form what is today known as Crystal City contributed greatly to its growth as a commercial center for eastern Loudoun and Prince William counties. By 1900 there were over 1,000 businesses in Crystal City alone - more than any other community in Loudoun or Prince William counties! In 1918 Arlington annexed much of neighboring jurisdictions including Springfield Township on the north side of Interstate 95 and Upper Braddock Township across Route 234 on the south side; these acquisitions made up nearly one third of all the territory annexation by Arlington since 1898! As development continued throughout the 20th century outside Crystal City along Friendship Avenue into North Bethesda Street outside Rosslyn Municipal Airport), many people began referring to "the Ringside District" which included much of central Arlington including most notably Myer Annexation which took place near Potomac Park later renamed "Everest". Everest became effectively an inner ring surrounding Crystal City while Myer remained off limits primarily to residents inside Central Business District who could see only suburban units within walking distance although some units could be reached by drive through windows!
