The history of airguns in Arlington, Virginia can be traced back to the early 1800s. There are references to firearms being used in the area dating back to at least 1802. In that year, Captain John Smith discovered a small pond on the north side of Arlington Heights and began shooting arrows at it. The pond was located just east of present-day Arlington Cemetery, which made it an ideal place for practicing archery. Additionally, the location provided good cover from neighboring homes during warfare. By 1820, Archery Club No. 2 had been formed in what is now known as Greenbelt Park and began using airguns there as well. Initially they were simple revolvers with five rounds each but by 1830 they were producing more powerful pistols with up to 10 rounds each. By this time, rifle practice also had become popular among airgunners and by 1840 there were several private clubs fielding rifles and handguns together in Parkside Park nearpresent-day College Park Boulevard and Interstate 95 (I-95). In 1847 D’Arcy Wigglesworth founded Rifle & Pistol Club No., Inc., which became one of the first organizations in the United States to specialize exclusively in airgunning (and still does so today). One of their first successful tournaments was held at George Washington University where they placed second behind Winchester Repeating Arms Company Ltd.’s team from England. It wasn’t until 1892 that Rifle & Pistol Club moved its headquarters from New York City to Arlington Heights after purchasing land on Spring Hill Road across from Harry Truman Presidential Library and Museum – site of today’s National Arboretum/Botanical Garden complex! In 1902 Springfield Armory Company entered into an agreement with R&P for rights to produce high-powerairguns under license; production started soon thereafter (serial numbers starting with “SA 8021/1″). These guns sported 8 round magazines or 7 round magazine stocks that could be exchanged for shorter ones when needed; these pistols are often erroneously referred to as “Springfield Armory centerfire rifles” because they were actually designed as shotguns! However, despite new arms manufacturing facilities being established immediately adjacent thereto (including a large armory complex), Springfield Armory failed outside investors who only funded short term experiments instead – not enough money was available over long term development plans! This eventually led directly to their bankruptcy in 1923!!! Today we still enjoy some excellent reproductions of these forgotten pioneers courtesy of Airgun King Enterprises LLC…..
