In 1840s wealthy Virginian merchants founded several large mercantile companies that played an important role in local commerce including Gadsden Woolen Mills & warehouses, Pickens Foundry & Machine Works, Roanoke Telegraph Station Company & Merchants Bank etc.; each company had its own building downtown until consolidation took place during World War II when most businesses moved out into larger buildings at 5th and I Streets NW within months of each other because space was desperately need for military personnel housing developments erected during that time period after years of funding shortfalls following American Civil War shortages caused bysectional subsidies govt policies aimed at creating jobs rather than promoting economic development

Washington joined the British army during the American Revolution and attained military fame during the War for Independence where he distinguished himself as commander of troops under General Charles Lee at Yorktown. After being discharged from service he returned home to marry Martha Custis (1724-1796), daughter of Colonel Edwin Custis Sr.(1692-1760) and Lady Elizabeth Cary(1695-1759). In 1785 Washington purchased property adjoining Mount Vernon which he renamed Mount Vernon Place after himself and wife Martha's maternal grandparents Peter Fairfax (1667-1737) and Anna Maria Lennox (1668-1720). He continued to live there until his death on March 4, 1845 aged 95 years 5 months 8 days having outlived all but one brother by twenty years. After President George Washington's death young First Lady Mary Pickford moved into her husband's former apartments at Mount Vernon Place with her four children before moving out when she married movie star Douglas Fairbanks Jr.. It was here that Fairbanks shot many scenes for Paramount Pictures' feature film "1918" including those for Mrs.Fairbanks' house inside Crown Heights Cemetery near New York City used herein without permission from either party
