In 1870 Drury Lane Baptist Church was built on land donated by Drury Lane entrepreneur James Iredell which later became known as One Hundred Acre Field near modern day Gaylord National Resort Park The tidal waters reaching Alexandria from Chesapeake Bay created problems for early developers such as Worth Tobacco Company because they could not control how much smoke or ash came out their factory chimneys due to high winds blowing across bay windowsills clean every day! To this day many old buildings still have traces of dusty tobacco smoke visible despite building measures like air filters! From 1860 until 1924 both steamboats moored at Old Point Comfort carried passengers upriver past today’s Fort McHenry Line to Phillip Island then downriver past today’s Anacostia River Bridge for disembarkation at "Queen Anne’s Dock" on upper river level where passengers would be transferred onto flatboats called “ boatswherries” which took them downstream around Today’s Anacostia Banks area through channels now occupied by Howard Street NW and 12th Street NE to reach Georgetown below without ever leaving our waterfront neighborhoods
