Today's downtown area is bounded by Market Street on the east side; I-95/I-495 on the west side; Broadwalk Avenue on the north side; King Street (Uptown) on the south side – all streets running perpendicular to each other about two blocks wide – making it difficult or impossible for pedestrians or cyclists to walk or bike through without heading straight into traffic lanes

The history of Alexandria, Virginia dates back to the early eighteenth century. The area that is now Alexandria was first settled by Native Americans in the late seventeenth century. After a long and arduous journey from various points in North America, the group of thirteen men and women who founded the town of Alexandria arrived in 1732. They named their new settlement after General James O’Hara, who had been instrumental in defeating the French at Saratoga. Alexandria quickly became a thriving village with an active commercial and political life. In 1735, Governor Thomas Hutchinson ordered Sir John Johnson, one of England's leading merchants and politician, to establish a permanent government in Alexandria. Johnson successfully appointed a group of local officials which included Mayor George Wythe and Town Clerk Nicholas Willingale. In response to this newfound prosperity, more people began moving into Alexandria than could be accommodated within its walls. By 1800, almost two-thirds of all residents living within the boundaries of present-day Alexandria were Englishmen or Irishmen. The growth of the town must have been due in part to its location on an important route connecting northern Virginia with southern Maryland and Delaware via Mechanicsville; as well as its proximity to both Richmond (then known as Williamsburg) and Baltimore (then known as Calvert City). Despite these benefits, however, development slowed down during the 18th century because there was no central government or highway system in place around which Alexandrians could congregate for commerce or socializing. This lack of infrastructure also contributed to taverns becoming popular gathering places where people could drink alcohol without fear of being fined or arrested. During this time period too many citizens migrated away from Alexandria due to economic reasons such as advances made by outside forces such as gunpowder manufacture at West Point and other military engagements conducted near and inside the borders of what is now Virginia Beach County. As result, certain areas within present-day Alexandria experienced significant population declines while others saw relatively little change until after World War II when waves OF Italian immigrants replaced British settlers as key contributors to postwar demographic growth throughout much northeastern Virginia/ southeastern Maryland

The city grew rapidly in population and trade during the Middle Ages, becoming one of the most important centers of medieval commerce and culture. In 1431 AD, Alexandria was sacked by Ottoman Turks, and never recovered from the damage done. retreated back to Syria in 1571 AD when Constantinople fell to Ottoman Turks. It returned as an American town following World War II.
