The first people in what is now South Burlington were Native Americans who lived near what is now the downtown district. The first European settler in what is now South Burlington was Pierre Latour who built a cabin in 1786. From his cabin until 1804 there were only six other Europeans living in South Burlington. In 1806 Nicholas Hennepin arrived with his family from Minnesota and started trading with the natives. By 1810 there were over 100 Europeans living in South Burlington and it became a city on March 12th, 1812 when it was incorporated as part of Rutland County. In 1860South Burlington voted to secede from Rutland County and become an independent municipality separate from Vermont. On July 1st 1861South Burlington became one of the towns within New York state when that state gained independence from Great Britain. On December 15th 1861South Burlington became one of the municipalities within Wellesley Township when that township gained independence from Wellesley Village which had been part of Watertown Township since 1692/93. On January 1st 1870the Town of North Dummerston merged into South Burlington due to differences between them over water rights for their respective townshipples (North Dummerston had access to Lake Champlain while South Bridgewater did not). On October 14th 1902South Windsor merged into South Burlington due to disagreements about municipal boundaries between those two villages after both had attained majority status through referenda held during 1903-1904]. On November 3rd 1910 voters passed an ordinance establishinghood for black citizens in Vermont; this ordinance repealed an earlier ordinance established just four years earlier by City Council members John Aiken and George Fenton which disqualified black citizens from voting unless they resided within white populated areas outside of Norwich or Springfield where they could gain access to ballot boxes provided by their white neighbors on election days. Afterward African Americans began regularly using buses instead of walking or riding horsebackaddle throughout much of central Vermont because transportation was unavailable for most people outside urban areas at that time.]] In 1916 African American Pvt Serv Obadiah Thomas founded Tuskegee Institute which served as a training ground for military officers during World War I]], In 1922 African American grocer Wm Epps formed Mount Elijah Cooperative grocery store & restaurant chain operating out East Greenfield Street ]], In 1924 African American electrician Harry Holmes opened Holmes Electric Company located on Statehouse Square [now Main Street] ]. ] In 1930 Alice Paul organized her local chapterof National Association For The Advancement Of Colored People (NAACP) here at SBCU & eventually transformed SBCU into Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous "I Have A Dream" speech hall ]. In 1965 Love Canal Poisoning made national headlines but little attention was given to locally based community organizations devoted thereto such as United Way Foundation]}] Today many businesses have closed down or relocated due à depressed economy however several select establishments still remain including Arthur Ashe Racquetball Courts.}
