The first European to settle in what is now South Burlington were French traders and missionaries who arrived in 1609. The town was founded by Nicholas Bourg (1611-1671), an Englishman who bought land from the Massa family in 1627 and named it after himself – South Burlington meaning "the side where he built his house." Bourg's home, which still stands today, is one of only a few remaining buildings from his time in South Burlington. Northumberland County served as the original county seat forVT until 1801 when Watertown became the new county seat after VT split into two counties following the American Revolution. In 1796, George Washington purchased 2,500 acres (1 km2) along the riverbank north of present day South Burlington for $425 per acre ($3/acre). Washington used this land to build what would become Mount Vernon - one of America's most renowned presidential homes. By 1800, smallpox had killed more than 1/3 of Vermont's population and Washington realized that without effective protection against this appalling disease he might have allowed its spread throughout his colonies had he not responded quickly to provide vaccination programs across all thirteen colonies during his term as President starting in 1795 – something that many people consider him responsible for beginning! South Burlington prospered during much of its early days due to its location close to water resources and easy access to transportation through Route 6 Bridge over Champlain River. South Burlington is a town in Essex County, Vermont, United States. The population was 9,739 at the 2010 census. The town began as part of the original towns of South Burlington and Brighton on the south shore of Lake Champlain and evolved from a rural agricultural community into an urban center over time. The firstsettlers in South Burlington were John Hill and his family who arrived in 1788 and built the first house on what is now State Street. In 1814, Joshua Hodge settled here with his wife Elizabeth alias "Betsy" Hodge. They had 4 children: Jonathan (1815-1892), James (1817-1900), Mary (1820-1912) and Sarah Hodge ( 1824-1906). John Atherton settled here in 1827 with his family and founded Atherton Tavern which still stands today on Center Street. In 1830, Isaac Norris bought land adjoining that of Joshua Hodge for $800 to build a farmstead known as North Anna. This was the beginning of what became known as Norrisville or North Burlington due to its location on Norris' land. By 1840, there were about 30 settlers living in South Burlington proper with some 50 more located around Norrisville including six families who lived at North Anna until it burned down in 1862 during Union Raids against Canada. During this period many small businesses operated out of homes like Nathan Bailey's Brewery which opened up shop just east of State Street across from present day US Route 20; Mrs Dooley's bakery which operated out front on Market Street between Church and School Streets; Goudreau’s grocery store located near where Main Street enters into town near Scenic Drive; Fenton’s tailor shop also located near where current day US Route 20 intersects with Chapel Road; several stores along what is now Randolph Road including one operated by Peter Matthews which closed its doors after World War I; two churches - First Congregationalist Church (~1800), afterwards Dutch Reformed Church (~1800), later United Methodist Church (~1900); three schools - One school started operations in 1855 called Academy School for Boys but was converted into girls high school called Elmira Female High School (~1875); one school started operations in 1865 called Singleton Academy but was converted into boys high school named Middlebury Academy (~1910). It should be noted that these are only approximate dates based upon available sources; actual date(s) may have been different entirely! In 1870, William Burtis purchased 160 acres northwest of South Burlington from Jonas Healey for $4 per acre lot which included much of what is now Watertown Square shopping district adjacent to Present Day State University campus/facility (now known as Watertown Square Library). Burtis renamed his property "Burlington". It remained unincorporated until it became incorporated as South Burlington Township on May 12th 1907 under the name "Burlington Township". On July 1st 1916 when New York City annexed Essex County they passed an act annexing all areas east Of River Rd & north Of state line & within 3 miles Of any city or village having a population over 10,000 residents makingSouth Burlington Township one stoplight within Queens county NY!!! so we can say our township boundaries went thru change since then...lol
