South Burlington, Vermont is a town in Rutland County, Vermont, United States. The population was 10,898 at the 2010 census. South Burlington is part of the Rutland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled in 1786 by General Israel Putnam and his family. South Burlington became an incorporated town on May 1, 1848. The first settlers in what is now South Burlington were General Israel Putnam and his family who arrived from Connecticut in 1786. General Putnam founded a small settlement on the east side of present-day North Avenue near where he later built his house which still stands today as part of the town center (now called "Putnamsville"). In 1808, after years of effort by several families who had come to trade with him and settle around what would become South Burlington, General Putnam filed a plat for an incorporated village within this new settlement; this application was granted on October 12th, 1808. On that date the Town Council voted 3-2 to incorporate as an incorporation under the name "South Burlington." The Townspeople quickly began to build their homes and businesses within their limits - soon there were stores, mills and churches dotting all around what would become known as "Putnamsville". With so many people living close together it wasn't long before problems arose; these included occasional violence between neighbors over petty differences such asSunday morning chores or disputes about lead poisoning rates from old roofing nails picked up during renovations! Due to its location at one end of Rutland County - just south of Interstate 84 - opportunities for growth were few and far between for early South Burlington residents. However with time things changed; gradually more people started moving into what would become our town from other towns in neighboring counties (I-84 brought subdivision development back after being shut down during World War II). Slowly but surely over time we came to be known as simply "South Burlington", thanks largely to our steadily growing downtown core complete with high quality shops/restaurants/bars/pizza places etc., along with some spectacular views overlooking Lake Champlain! By the late 1990s things had really taken off: we had even implemented a full city management system including streetscapes/parking lots etc.; becoming one charming little community unlike any other in New England! In recent decades there have been Numerous changes taking place throughout our once humble little village... most notably Hurricane Irene which completely destroyed much of our downtown core & left us virtually homeless (& scarred for life) due to extensive flooding aftermath; however thankfully nothing has stopped us from coming back stronger than ever before! Our Mayor Melvin Jorgensen has spearheaded numerous initiatives designed squarely towards keeping our community relevant & thriving despite big challenges thrown its way... From creating new public areas like Market Square – home to acclaimed restaurants & cafes – all while maintaining essential services like firefighting efforts & streetlights etc.;to revitalizing historic structures such as Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Church – one of oldest parish buildings still standing in America – all while promoting openmindedness & tourism amongst our citizens; it's clear that Mayor Jorgensen truly cares about making sure that everyone involved knows how proud we are here… And that’s something special indeed!
