South Burlington, Vermont is a town in Rutland County, Vermont, United States. The population was 7,007 at the 2010 census. South Burlington is the largest municipality in Rutland County and it is also one of the few towns in Vermont with an active downtown core. The first European settlers to the area that now includes South Burlington were people from England in 1664. They built churches and farms on what are now Park Street and Water Street. The land that would become South Burlington was granted to Major John Smith by King George III in 1781 as part of the Adams-Onis Treaty. Smith named it for his friend Daniel Burritt, 1st Viscount Northumberland (1724-1812). Burritt had come to America as a privateer in 1768 and became a wealthy merchant and politician in New York City before moving to Greenfield, Massachusetts, where he founded a paper mill. He served as mayor of Boston from 1802 to 1807 and then as secretary of state under Presidents James K. Polk (1841-45) and Franklin D. Roosevelt (1939-45). In 1814 Adam Yates purchased two lots east of present day State Street from Samuel Morse & Co., developers of Worcester County's first canal system. This site would later become home to Yates' Brewery which still stands today across Church Street from Atkinson Hall School (now known as Middlebury College). In 1830 John Cutler erected the first frame house within what would be South Burlington limits when he bought three acres along Water Street from Captain Ebenezer Pownall for $400 cash plus 2/3 interest on each £5 note he issued during its early years; this money remains invested today by descendants of Cutler's heirs through their holding company Cutler Financial Corporation.) South Burlington is a town in Essex County, Vermont, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. South Burlington is part of the Burlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now South Burlington was Nicholas Rowe in 1776. Rowe and his family moved from Connecticut to present-day Essex County in 1779. In 1809, Daniel McGillivray purchased land east of the river from Nicholas Rowe and began building a house on what are now Main Street and Court Street. South Burlington began as a small settlement on the southeast side of the river near where Park Avenue and Grandview Avenue meet today. By 1831, however, only about fifty people were living in what became South Burlington after parcels were sold off for development along the river's edge. In 1847, when Vermont became an independent state, it included part of present-day Essex County along with Lake Champlain Valley and parts of Hamilton and Rutland counties. The towns of East Norwich (present-day Northfield) and West Norwich (present-day Waterbury) were incorporated within South Burlington limits on May 10th of that year; these towns had been unincorporated since before that date because their boundaries lay outside of town lines set by act of Parliament as part of New York's boundary acquisitions during the War for Independence. On July 1st, 1849 – one month after Vermont's admission into Confederation – all but two residents in South Burlington voted to secede from Unionism over disputed resolutions passed at a meeting held at Riverside tavern on June 27th which had also called for secession if Quebec did not become a republic under Canada’s leadership after its own victory over France inolitically located around Montreal – this issue having arisen due to Québec’s refusal to recognize Canada’s annexation by Upper Canada following its victory over British Columbia at Battle Of Brougham Bay on September 9th just north west of Québec City which resulted in British Columbia becoming Canadan soil despite Québec’s earlier rejection thereof – annexed by Canada as per proclamation issued by His Excellency John Graves Simcoe while still resident at Kingston upon Hull Ontario Territory Headquarters pursuant to his Order No.: 3 dated November 5th one thousand nine hundred ninety four entitled “An Address To His Majesty Queen Victoria From The Executive Council Of Upper Canada Relative To Our Situation And Desires As A Dominion Province” This action took place less than three weeks prior to Upper Canadian Forces Occupying Montréal During The Franco-Prussian War On October 15th1849 Following Which Time Provincial Governor Sir James Pakenham Admitted That Quebec Reached Its Maximum Population At More ThanDouble What It Once Was Due To Immigration Alone Also Commenting Upon Our Capacity To Support itself And With Respect To Your Majesty’s Opinion I Shall Say Hereinafter That We Do Not Need Your Help Or Assistance Inorder To Keep Our Country Going throghtout This Dilemma In 1861 much like other southern VT Towns Many People migrated out For Economic reasons Many Ended Up Settling In NH & WI After The Civil War Ended Some Bought Lands In NH & WI Became Militias Confederate Soldiers At Homecoming
