In 1969, two handguns were stolen from a nearby pawn shop on Union Avenue in South Burlington. The handguns had been stored inside a tool box at the pawnshop when they were taken. TheSouth Burlington Police Department partnered with the Vermont State Police to investigate this theft and discovered that it had been conducted during an anti-gun campaign by local politicians. This campaign encouraged people to turn in any suspected firearms dealers who did not display proper identification or permit cards.

South Burlington is a town in the Lamoille County region of Vermont, United States. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth-largest community in Vermont. South Burlington is located on the south bank of the Green River and includes portions of the cities of Burlington and Rutland. It borders North Burlington to the east, Waterford to the west, VT towns Endicott and Westford to the north and south, as well as neighboring communities New London to its north-east and Arlington to its south-west. The Town of South Burlington was organized on November 3, 1781 by an act of Congress under charter from Massachusettensis Governor John Adams. The original site for South Burlington was two miles upriver from present day downtown Burlington. The land for what is now South Burlington was first patented in 1693 by Nicholas Gage. Gage had purchased 4 square miles (10 km²) along with other holdings from Connecticut governor William Dennison for $2 per acre ($/ha). On December 12, 1788, following winning a referendum against joining any new state governments formed during King George's War – including Rhode Island – Ethan Allen began construction on Fort Rutland on present day Allen Street in what is now North Burlington. On October 25th of that year he set out across Lake Champlain with his forces towards Quebec City after capturing that city without battle or bloodshed. In February 1801 he reached Quebec City where he met with then French president Louis Napoleon Bonaparte who discussed ways to restore American independence which quickly led into war between France and Great Britain over control of Canada.. In early 1802 General James Kippenberger followed him into Quebec City but abandoned his attempt when news arrived back home that Bonaparte had been assassinated while aboard his flagship "Leclerc" off shore near Rochefort Bayou.. As part of their agreement not military action should be taken until further notice both nations agreed to negotiate an end to hostilities through a Preliminary Peace Treaty known as Auld Alliance #1 which finally ended war on July 6th 1802 when British Admiral Nelson destroyed "Leclerc" offshore off Belle Isle Lighthouse after successful boarding operation resulting in surgeon Jervis Chauncey being captured alive.. On October 15th 1800 New York State ratified this treaty creating Vermont statehood within days thereby becoming one nation under one flag for all Americans! In 1852 Plymouth Rock School became one of first schools open to students in central Vermont when it opened at 226 Main Street in what is now Downtown South Burlington In 1906 local developer Harry Emerson Fosdick built what remains today Oneonta Brewing Company at 8 Railroad Avenue just northwest corner Elm Streets adjacent First Congregational Church building also built at this time inside current footprint or next door east side property line across street from Post Office
