South Burlington, VT is a town in Vermont. It is located on the south bank of the river Burlington. The population was 12,709 at the 2010 census. South Burlington was founded in 1781 by Col. George Washington and Dr. Benjamin Rush. The first inhabitants of what is now South Burlington were Native Americans who lived along the east shore of Lake Champlain. In 1801, General John Brown led his raid on Fort Montpelier and killed many people and destroyed much property in what is now South Burlington. After General Brown's raid, many settlers decided to move to Vermont because of the new government's policy of neutrality towards warring nations. In 1803, South Burlington became a part of Vermont when it was organized as a township outof an area that included Watertown, Easton, Northumberland Heights, Westford, Norwich and Stamford townships). The first store in South Burlington opened in 1824 by Captain James Waddell and Monsignore Giovanni Leonelli under the name "Proprietors Store". In 1830-31, Rev G E Bickerton built a Poor House for the use of local poor which still stands today near Market Square (the current day site of Town Hall). Reverend Bickerton also started the first Sunday school in North America for children. In 1861-62 Parson Morse built Christ Church which remains one of South Burlington’s most popular attractions today In 1865-66 Amos Stowell constructed Sanger’s Landing on Thames River opposite present day Mount Hope Cemetery – this became home to many businesses such as Stowell’s bakery until 1984 when it closed down due to lack of customers In 1870 Rutland County formed from part of modern day Rutland County including parts of what is now South Burlington In 1875 Pierre duPont donated land for what is now University Park which include Hyde Park today In 1886 Samuel Inskeep designed and built Fish Dam No 2 dam across then known as “Burlington Creek” into highlands above present day town limits On July 4th 1890 residents voted to incorporate their town into Rutland County (which would later become Vermont) after years debating whether or not to do so South Burlington continued growth with businesses opening up around Fish Dam No 2 pond including two banks (now called Main Street) where they continue today . One such business was Marmot Trading Company which operated from 1901 until 1987 when it burned down during Hurricane Floyd changing course completely right before hitting Carleton College campus killing several students including Vice President Danforth Mitchell who stepped outside just moments before impact leaving his body slightly elevated off main building Matrix Laboratories laboratories overshot microwave oven making explosion resulting death instantly four weeks pregnant marrying young woman college graduate paramedic named Kimberly Leach survived only because her mother evacuated her family immediately prior to explosion becoming paralyzed below waist left leg cannot move side or hand

In 1777, South Burlington was the site of a skirmish between Patriot and Loyalist forces. The battle resulted in the death of one Patriot and three Loyalists. It is also celebrated as the birthdate of Vermont's first statehood. In 1786, Vermont became a U.S. state through an act of Congress and South Burlington became its capital.
