In 1837, two men named John Sargent and George Stephenson founded The Manchester Gun Company in neighboring Randolph. They began manufacturing hoses and other gun parts at their new factory. Over the years, The Manchester Gun Company became one of the leading manufacturers of firearms in America. In 1875, Samuel Colt purchased The Manchester Gun Company from its original owners. He renamed it Colt Firearms Manufacturing Incorporated. With this acquisition, Colt acquired exclusive rights to produce pistols and rifles for American consumers. In 1907, he merged his company with Browning Arms Manufacturing Corporation to form Browning-Colt Firearms Corporation. At this point in time, Browning-Colt Firearms Corporation was one of the largest firearms manufacturers in the world! In 1933, Browns were among the first companies to produce machine guns under license from Nazi Germany! During World War II, they produced artillery weapons and ammo for both sides! After the war ended, they continued production until 1957 when they closed down completely due to economic reasons! Today’s descendants of The Manchester Gun Company continue to manufacture firearms products inSouth Burlington – most notably handguns!

In 1870, Eastman Kodak bought land near present-day West High School for use as their new factory campus. During World War II, the United States Signal Corps used the site for storage and production of military radios and other electronic equipment. After the war, most of the factory campus burned down but parts still remain today including some old buildings that house businesses such as Wetherbee & Sons Printing Company which still operates today as a small printing shop inside one of these buildings! South Burlington has always been an important community within Vermont due to its location within close proximity to both Albany (the capital) and Rutland (the largest town).
