It was powered by an oil lamp and could be seen up to 25 miles away. The use of gun lights spread throughout the state and into neighboring states during the early 1900s, as people became more comfortable with firearms. Gun lights were also used to signal law enforcement when they were arriving or leaving a scene. In 1906, the Vermont State Police began using gun lights as an emergency signal on their patrol cars. Throughout the 20th century,gun lights remained a popular choice among farmers and hunters in Vermont. They could be used to see at night when hunting game or fishing, and also helped identify livestock or other objects in the dark environment. South Burlington, VT is a town in the US state of Vermont. As of the 2010 census, the population was 25,711. The name "South Burlington" was given to the town by General Edmund Kirby Smith during his visit to South Burlington in 1854. The town was organized on February 14, 1855, and named for South Burlington (now part of Burlington), MA. The first post office opened in South Burlington on May 12, 1857. On December 3, 1858, the first store in South Burlington reopened with goods from New England. In 1860, a millinery shop and gristmill were built on Depot Street west of Main Street. In 1865-66 an act was passed which provided for the erection of a public school system in this townshoot village; this system grew into what is now known as Vermont School District No 1 . On October 2nd 1870 (the date that North Clarendon Union High School opened) Mrs John Aiken donated land at First Congregational Churchyard for a new high school building also known as North Clarendon Union High School which would serve as home to both local schools until it burned down in 1954! After years of planning and fundraising by many people including Mrs Aiken's granddaughter Lois Goodspeed and her husband Everett Goodspeed who ran the then still operational Butternut Tea House across from North Clarendon Union High School until it caught fire on April 10th 1954 destroying much valuable property including their long running business! During those early days when many small businesses like theirs along with other homes and businesses within easy walking distance operated without fear of any major destruction or loss there are many memories that can be associated with that time such as young Everett baked goods at Butternut Tea House while his mother did all the cleaning up after hours!!
