South Burlington, Vermont is a town in Essex County, Vermont, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2000 census. The name "South Burlington" is derived from the Native American word "owa", meaning "place of refuge." It was part of the British colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations until 1664 when it became part of New England. South Burlington was incorporated as a town on February 15, 1853. In 1802, John Adams built what is now the John Adams House in South Burlington. In 1814, he and his wife Abigail moved into the home which they called Mount Hope after their home in Randolph County, Virginia. In 1825 they moved to 2 Beacon Street in downtown South Burlington where they lived until their death in 1865. They were buried at Arlington Cemetery with other Founding Fathers including George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. The first post office in South Burlington was established on April 20, 1800 by Samuel Fenton for George Morse who had donated land for the station. On October 10, 1823 Postmaster General Caleb Thornton announced that towns had been established throughout New England for mail service so that everyone would be able to receive messages quickly and easily without going to Boston or Hartford each time. The first town meeting held in South Burlington was on December 5th attended by representatives from eight towns present including Northampton (now Northvale), Rutland (now Rockingham), Springfield (now Stowe), Auburn (now East Aurora), Goshen (now West Goshen) and Winooski (now Winooski). The selectmen of these towns came up with a plan entitled “Village Improvement Society” which provided for an elected board to manage all aspects of village life such as finances and public works while also educating citizens about village virtues such as industry and morality etc.. This plan has been continued annually since then though some changes have occurred e.g., removal of freeholders to allow more efficient management but it remains essentially unchanged today! It wasn't until about 1830 that settlers started moving into what is now South Burlington from neighboring towns within Essex County like Randolph Township or Addison Township due to favorable land deals made between local leaders and America's third president James Kieft who owned large tracts of land along Lake Champlain . Most early settlers landed near what is now Front Street/Beacon Avenue however there were also settlements located around Main Street/Washington Boulevard(later renamed Park Row) west of Church Road northward towards Saratoga Springs before finally ending up along Lakeshore Drive eastbound! In total there are over 150 documented settler locations associated with this area making it one of most highly documented areas during this time period! You can visit many different sites throughout your day if you take a walk outside your home- something that many people didn't have access to prior to 1900! For example; If you drive down Market Street past King's Chapel you will come across several Revolutionary War battlefields notaccessible until recently including Fort Putnam which served as artillery battery #2 during Battle Of Bunker Hill – an event known locally as “The March To Concord”! Alternatively; if you take a busride out Route 9 southbound near where Route 128 meets SR 3(the original routing) you will reach several churches which were used by various militaries during the Revolutionary War e.g.; Trinity Episcopal Church whose tower still stands today; Palmyra Presbyterian Church which served as headquarters for Patriot forces during Siege Of Saratoga; Milton Academy whose buildings still stand today…..just a few examples! South Burlington quickly became known for its beautiful walking trails connecting every house on either side OF Main Street- giving residents plenty opportunity to get out AND explore their community ! One particular trail traversing through residential neighborhoods runs parallel with Middle School Rd./Church Road heading east/west while another goes opposite direction running northwest/southeast right alongside Interstate 90 just past Exit 25A !! Nowadays these walks are often filled with students leaving school or locals enjoying summertime activities but back then THEY were simply amazing pieces OF landscape & history !!
The town of South Burlington, Vermont was first established in 1792. The area that now makes up South Burlington was part of the large Rutland Province. The town's first settlers were farmers who came from England and Ireland. In 1814, the United States acquired ownership of Rutland Province and the town became a part of the new nation. In 1842, South Burlington incorporated as a city. After World War II, South Burlington grew rapidly with the arrival of new residents and businesses.
