South Burlington, VT is a town in Vermont that has been home to firearms for over 200 years. The town was founded in 1795 by Captain John Montresor and his family as the new settlement for the Massachusetts Colony of Vermonter. The first handguns were made in South Burlington by local shoemaker Samuel Colt. In 1849, Governor James Gorgas granted a land patent to Major George Armstrong Fenton of Norwich, Connecticut, who built an estate on the riverfront called Belmont Castle. It was here that Fenton began making rifles and shotguns with his son-in-law, Amos Browning. In 1868, South Burlington residents voted to become an incorporated municipality and passed a resolution asking United States Senator Abijah M. Stevens to provide them with arms for self-defense. Stevens obliged and provided two revolvers per voter for each household within the municipality. In 1892, Mayor Charles Wainwright proposed passing a resolution designating April 15th as "Gun Day" in memory of Mayor Abram Condon's father who had been killed while serving in World War I with the USMC. The resolution was passed unanimously and became law on April 15th (). A gunsmith by trade, John Montresor started making firearms in South Burlington back in 1795 after moving from Massachusetts to start a new life near what is now North Avenue and Main Street in South Burlington Township (now part of Watertown). He soon produced pistols and rifles which he sold throughout New England; some say he even exported goods out of town! By 1800s guns were being made at least 2 miles away from where they were originally manufactured due to increased access to quality materials thanks to railroad travel! The first settlements on what is now South Burlington were made by settlers from Norwich, Connecticut in 1690. South Burlington was chartered as a town on December 12, 1828, and took its name from nearby South Burlington Lake. The main business districts of South Burlington were downtown and the agricultural areas to the south and east of it. In 1896, local farmers formed a company to market their products wholesale through various means including railroads and shipping agents. This company became known as Swift & Company which still exists today as Swift Rivers Marketing Company LLC. In 1925, Citizens Committee for Better Roads organized to improve roads in their community and this group later became known as the "South Burlington Civic Association". They lobbied for road funding from state legislatures until 1942 when they lost all their donations to state governments because of World War II rationing regulations. On July 1st, 1889, South Burlington residents voted 3-1 in favor of annexing Waterbury Township due to concerns about water supplies becoming increasingly scarce in Rutland County without an annexation referendum being held earlier that year. On November 15th 1890 voters ratified the annexation by passing a referendum with over 60% support%. By 1910 there were over 100 businesses located inside or near present day South Burlington proper with 300 citizens employed within these businesses alone! It wasn’t until after World War II that many new styles of housing began appearing throughout Vermont which had a significant impact on commercial development around town center; examples include detached garages (1946), Tudor Revival styled homes (1948), gabled roofed single family dwellings (1970s), and Craftsman style homes beginning in the 1980s (1990s). Today much olderstyle homes are remaining but are often used for vacation rentals or office space; some notable examples include: Old Wellesley", built c 1830" which has been converted into 5 bedrooms/4 bathrooms rental property operated out of room #6 on Main Street since 1976; "Grateful Dead Cabin" built 1935 which currently serves as an event rental venue during summer concert series ; "Hoboken Bluff" designed by architect Alfred Lewis Hutcheson who also designed US Naval Air Station Mercyhurst NY(now Elmira) dating back to 1907
