South Burlington, Vermont is a town in the U.S. state of Vermont and the county seat of Burlington County. The population was 381 at the 2010 census, down from 439 at the 2000 census. The original town site was on high ground east of downtown Burlington, but it was moved in 1854 to its current location near South Street and Washington Avenue. It may be named for George Washington Carver, who came to Vermont as a white boy in 1847 and became one of the most successful farmers in that state. The history of South Burlington goes back to 1756 when trustees agreed to give land northeast of what is now South Burlington to John Adams for his farmstead known as "Adams Hill". Adams built a home there and called it "Southbury." In 1774, during King George's War, Congress awarded Lake Champlain Valley (now southeastern New York) to Vermont because then-Governor Benning Wentworth had refused an offer from France for neutrality in the war. In 1800, James Fenton bought land southeast of what is now South Burlington from Samuel Chase for $2 million dollars ($102 million today). Fenton renamed his tract "Fenton's Plains" after himself and began developing it into large farms which he used as grazing lands for his livestock until 1800 when he decided to build a town on the property called "Fentonville." He did this because he saw no other place in Vermont where people could settle and develop their businesses so quickly. The first settler in Fentonville was Isaac Andros who arrived on July 2, 1800 with his wife Sarah; three children: Lydia (1801-1881), John (1799-1868), and Peter (1797-1872). They founded a small trading post known as Andros' Ferry overstream from present day Chapel Road/Washington Avenue just north of what is now First Nation Lake Drive/Route 9A south of Interstate 95 Exit 20B. By 1802 only four families resided in Fentonville; Isaac Andros', Abraham Andros', Moses Crouse,' +John Morse'. That year Indians attacked settlers living along both sides of Chapel road between Andros' Ferry landing & Lower Canada Creek mouth; all were killed including two toddlers John Morse fortunately escaped injury by jumping into creek bed just before they hit him! As hostilities continued between British North America & American Revolutionary forces skirmishes took place along this stretch - 4 men were wounded during action May 7th 1777 Colonel Cadwallader Owen being amongst them - local militia acted upon information received about Indian activity leading immediatelyto military encampment 1 mile W end River viewable thro’ campfire Feb 21st 1778 2 miles due E side Presque Isle Canal [Northeastern boundary] . . . these events led General Burgoyne orders Genl Gage march thru VT establish new line
The Dutch founded South Burlington in 1664, and the area that now includes South Burlington was developed as a separate town by English settlers in the 17th century. In 1801, Vermont became a U.S. state, and South Burlington became part of it. The city's population peaked in the early 20th century, but has since declined overall.
