South Burlington, Vermont is a town in Rutland County, Vermont, United States. The population was 4,802 at the 2010 census. South Burlington is part of the Rutland–Windham Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1777, British Colonel John Montresor and his unit of militiamen founded South Burlington as an outpost on the southern border of present-day Rutland County. The town grew rapidly during the 18th century due to its strategic location on the Great Lakes and its access to timber and water resources. The first settler in what would become South Burlington was John Dickinson who arrived in 1779. By 1800, there were over 100 people living in South Burlington. The town became a county seat in 1834 and remained so until 1861 when it merged with neighboring Windham into the new Rutland County. In 1916, South Burlington merged with neighboring North Hero to form what is now known as "North Hero/South Burlington". During World War II, many industries such as munitions production took place in South Burlington thanks to its proximity to New England's largest military area. After the war ended, local businesses slowly began to collapse as technological advancements replaced traditional manufacturing methods which had sustained the community for centuries before. However, this did not mean that south Burlington was lost forever; several initiatives have helped revitalize downtown south Burlington including an arts scene bolstered by art galleries and music venues along with startup companies (e.g., Foursquare) which continue to thrive today despite having no physical presence within their original districts or neighborhoods—a trend seen throughout much of Northeastern Vermont’s larger municipalities periphery where redevelopment has been more sporadic or less aggressive than total replacement of older infrastructure by new development). Today, south Burlington remains one of VT’s most vibrant communities both physically and emotionally due largely to its sterling mix of locally owned businesses operated independently from outside forces while also enjoying increasing access to quality public services – something that has been increasingly difficult statewide given trends towards corporate consolidation and government austerity measures (e.g., cutbacks in funding for essential public transportation systems).
