By 1945 all major belligerents had entered World War II with modern weapons capable of firing high explosive rounds (See table 1). Ammunition shortages led to mass production techniques for both conventional explosives-based munitions such as dynamite and armour piercing bullets- leading to increased casualty rates during conflict (See table 2). By 1946 almost all calibers of ammunition had been produced world-wide with about two thirds being available for use in warfare (See table 3). However, since ammunition is bulky and expensive to produce there has been little innovation in its design or manufacture since the nineteenth century when pistols began using lead bullets instead of Stone caliber projectiles

After the war ended, South Burlington reverted back to its previous status as a small community.
