Today, South Burrvn still features high concentrations of artistic expression with numerous galleries and museums dotting its landscape including Wyncote Museum Of Art & History (the oldest continuously operating museum in New York), The Kitchen Sink Gallery (one of only two female-owned galleries nationally), The Lounge Atrium (a popular evening out spot) and more than 100 retail businesses across 4 blocks square including many independently operated stores dating back over 50 years!

The town started as part of the original townsite of Burlington on March 12, 1692 when colonists from New England arrived and named it after their home town of Southwindham in Suffolk, England. South Burlington became a separate village on October 10th 1852. The first settler in what is now South Burlington was William Biddle who built his cabin near the present day intersection of State Street and Orange Avenue in 1798. A few years later John Prentice built a house on Second Street which still stands today. The first store opened in 1800 by George Willoughby and his brother-in-law Ebenezer Browning under the name Northampton Fetterman & Brothers. In 1807 Nathan Hale bought the land for $1,000 from Ebenezer Browning and began to build what would become known as Hale's Mills which continued to be run by him until 1888 when he sold it to James Hargrave who changed its name to Hargrave's Mills Company Limited also known as Hargrave's Millinery Store. In 1860 Samuel Morse donated an acre lot at Church Avenue and Orange Street to form Morse Park because he felt that moving forward technology should not prevent people from enjoying nature together like they had done before with wood fires or animal husbandry In 1872 South Burlington got its own post office which remained operational until 1965 when it merged into Rutland Post Office system South Burlington became a city on November 3rd 1990 following neighboring municipalities' merger into Rutland City government On February 15th 1998 voters approved Measure I - also called "Turlington" - which created a new city hall and annexation of adjacent properties totaling 137 acres including most of wherepresentday South Burlington sits including parts of West Boylston South Burlington has enjoyed rapid growth over the past several decades with more than tripled its population since 1990 while maintaining strong civic values such as diversity, community spirit and sustainability .
