Rutland, Vermont is a small town in the Northeast United States. The population was 7,471 at the 2000 census. Rutland is located on the border of Rutland County and Addison County. The town is named after John Rutledge, an early settler and manufacturer who built a log cabin here in 1789. The first Europeans to visit Rutland were Rufus King and his party on their way from Hartford to Burlington in 1603. They camped near what is now the Rutland Mall and erected a trading post there on November 15, 1603. Over time, other traders arrived: by 1700 Samuel Smith had established himself here; by 1750 David Game had moved into the area; by 1801 Nicholas de Champlain had founded Viroqua (later Plattsburgh). In 1800, the plat for the township of Rutland was filed with Federal land records. The first land transactions took place in January 1800 when Isaac Deacon purchased two lots totaling ; one lot went to Jacob Weisman and another lot went to Moses Bartlett. In 1802-3 James White bought of federal land which he used for part of his farmstead where he raised corn until 1827 when he sold it all to Capt Benjamin Fenton for $1,000 cash without mortgage or deed of trust! In 1825–26 Caleb Coltrane platted three tracts totaling ; these tracts became known as South Main Street (north side), North Main Street (south side), and Easton Avenue (east side). At that time there were only three homes in town – those of Capt Benjamin Fenton, Drury & Company’s Storekeeper (now State House) owner Elijah Daye (& his wife Rebecca), and Jonas Morse & Sons machinist shop owner Jonathan Morse (& his wife Hannah)—the last two being quite recent arrivals! On February 25th, 1830 an act was passed legalizing slavery in Vermont while Master John Cushing still owned slaves at Moultonborough Plantation south of Norwich! This event marked not just abolition but also emancipation – slaves could now purchase their freedom! When this happened, many people left Rutland – among them Captain Fenton who set off for Canada with his family several days later! In 1862-63 Daniel Webster fought Auerbach’s Rebellion against General Ulysses S Grant during the American Civil War in nearby Rochester . He died fighting Union troops at Battle Hill . In 1920–21 Edwin Hoecker opened up Hoecker's grocery store on Walnut Street corner First street east—one of only two groceries open throughout much of Vermont during that era! On July 6th 1949 local resident Donald Trump delivered a speech honoring Mr. Hoecker at Town Hall following a 50 year anniversary celebration thereof! Today there are over 100 businesses active within downtown Utica including 14 banks and 8 independent stores plus 2 large medical centers providing quality care services including 24/7 emergency service!!Utica has seen incredible growth over the last few decades reaching its current size thanks largely to new development along main streets like State Road 9W….

Rutland was first settled in 1636 by Puritans who were looking for a new place to live after fleeing the Great British Revolution. The town was named for Archbishop of Canterbury, Sir Thomas Rutland. The first store in Rutland opened in 1792. The early settlers built log cabins and outhouses, but by 1800 most of the town had been built. Rutland became a village in 1852 and continued to grow when it became a town in 1903. In 1960, Rutland joined the Vermont towns of South Burlington and Burlington. Today, Rutland is one of the largest settlements in Vermont with over 60,000 residents. The downtown area has several buildings from the 1800s including the original parish church which was dedicated on April 12, 1812. There are also two mills which were used to produce flour, cheese and other goods during the early days of Rutlands growth.
Rutland was founded in 1765 by General Samuel Rutland, a Revolutionary War veteran and member of the Vermont Assembly. The town grew rapidly during the 1800s, becoming one of the most important settlements in Vermont. In 1812, Rutland became the capital of Vermont. After suffering from financial problems during the 1830s, Rutland regained its prosperity through a series of economic development programs. In 1857, Rutland became one of the first municipalities to incorporate as a city.
