Rutland became a town on December 12, 1846. The first settlers in what is now Rutland were farmers who came to the area from England in 1633. In 1814, James Jepson and his family purchased 640 acres (259 hectares) of land around present-day Rutland and built their house on this property. They named their plantation "Rutland." In 1816, they sold additional land to John Nicholson and Family for $1,000. From this initial purchase of , James Jepson laid out one mile (1 km) wide streets that run east-west through the village today. In 1825, David Dudley bought an acreage adjacent to the Nicholson home for $2 worth of tobacco seedlings! This was significant as it marked Dudleys first planting of tobacco into what would become Rutlands history as a spinning mill town! He continued purchasing tracts of land until he had exhausted all possibilities for development within his allotted square footage; however he did not sell any of these properties until after his death in 1850. By 1860, farming had replaced spinning mills as the primary industry in Rutland with over 60% employment being associated with agriculture! The Village Board began to build schools in 1895 which increased enrollment by 50%. HoweverDemand for school space led to the construction of two high schools – Burlington High School and Pittsfield High School – between 1966 and 1975 respectively! Today there are only 8 students per grade level attending these schools while three elementary buildings remain standing downtown from when they were constructed: First Congregational Church (1896), Masonic Temple/Baptist Temple/Episcopal Chapel (1901), and First Presbyterian Church (1905). A new firehouse was completed during 1978–1979 called Station C5 which served as Headquarters for both Burlington Firefighters Squad No 2 & 3 and also served as a Departmental Training Facility where firefighters from all overVT could attendfire academy classes held at night under guidance from departmental Instructors! Today many businesses continue operations like Towne Bank which opened its doors on Main Street back when it was known as Merchants Bank; lastly there’s food court type restaurant called Garden District that has been open since 1993 called Five Points Diner & Tavern

Rutland, Vermont is a small town in the US state of Vermont. The population was 24 at the 2010 census. Rutland is located in the Rutland-Newburgh area of central Vermont. It began as a logging community and grew rapidly as an agricultural center during the early 19th century. In 1825, Rutland became hispanicized and Italian immigrants began to arrive here as well. The town has since regained its English roots and today is a mix of English, Portuguese, Spanish, Polish, German, Irish and Italian descent. The first permanent settler in Rutland was Nicholas Rogers who arrived in 1795 from Marblehead on Massachusetts Bay Colony with his family. Rogers built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. He later moved to what is now part of Park Street where he started grading land for farming purposes. In 1805, Rogers married Susannah Haynes and they set up home on present day North Avenue which served as their home until her death in 1830. They had six children: Nicholas (1806-75), John (1810-74), Sarah (1812-59), Ezekiel (1814-76), Hannah (1816-56) and Nathaniel (1819-68). Their daughter Sarah married John Haskell in 1846 and their son Israel Haskell took over their farm operations after his father's death in 1865. Rutland, Vermont was first settled in 1765 by Captain John Smith. The town was named for the ancient Rutlandshire district in England. In 1801, the town was incorporated as a village. A post office was established in 1811 and remained in operation until 1840. In 1861, Rutland became a town when it amalgamated with neighboring Unadilla and Burlington. The population of Rutland increased rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location on the Great Lakes region and its importance as a manufacturing center. During World War II, Rutland became one of the largest housing areas in the United States because of its proximity to Lake Champlain. After the war, Rutland experienced rapid growth as an agricultural community and attained city status in 1959. In 2013, Rutland merged with neighboring Williston to form a new city-state called "Williston".
