Rutland, Vermont is a town in Rutland County, Vermont, United States. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Rutland County and the second-most populous town in Vermont after Burlington. The name of the town comes from its location on a small island in the Rutland River. The first Europeans to visit what is now Rutland were French traders who set up trading posts there in 1609-10. In 1701, British troops burned down much of the village of Grand Isle on an expedition against Native Americans who had occupied that area for many years. In 1814 a group of farmers banded together and purchased 3 acres (1 km2) of land along the river's edge to form what is now Rutland Township. That year also saw growth when lumber mills were established around this time and people began moving into the township from other parts of Vermont. In 1834–35 John Dennett built a mill on Mill Pond which became one of the largest mills in New England until it closed in 1886 because of competition from larger mills elsewhere. The Dennetts also ran a grocery store and post office here for some time before it closed as well. During World War II, Rutland served as Headquarters for Air Technical Service Command (ATSC) during World War II at Peabody Air Force Base near Springfield, Massachusetts; VT Airport; and various airfields across New England including Manchester-By-the-Sea Airport located 9 miles (15 km) east-northeast of town center on Route 128 just outside Ofallon Township; White Sands Missile Range located 12 miles (19 km) northwest by truncating VT Route 10 about halfway between VT Airport and town center).
