Between 1800 and 1860, about 150 new buildings were built in and around Rutland according to architectural historian Stuart Palfrey's book " Architecture of the American South". In 1892, the first electric streetlights were installed in Rutland when they became part of Burlington Electric Railway (BET) territory. BET provided power for lights on all streets withinUtica Township including those running through Rutlandtown proper as well as several small villages near it including Northfield and Westford which received power from separate lines going into neighboring townships. Rutland, Vermont is a small town located in the eastern part of the state of Vermont. The population was 7,611 at the 2010 census. Rutland is one of two towns in Rutland County and is home to the main village, which has a population of about 1,500 people. It is also home to several smaller villages scattered throughout the town. The townsite was first settled by Europeans in 1775 as part of what would become Burlington County. A post office called Rutland existed from 1807 until it was discontinued in 1828. The town name comes from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning "rich farm." In 1846, a group of farmers banded together and formed a society called the Rutlanders to promote agricultural interests in their community. The society became an incorporated entity under state law on July 16, 1850. The early years of Rutland were difficult due to various factors including increased competition from surrounding municipalities andvillages that had been designated as Racine and Watertown respectively by the state government during its time as an open territory. Despite these challenges, Rutland slowly began to grow over time thanks to its strong community spirit and lack of reliance on outside assistance. In 1907, Rutland became one of only two towns in Vermont (along with Randolph) that did not suffer from any direct blows from World War I; this success helped contribute to its slow but steady growth over time. In 1951, the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway built tracks through central Rutland making it possible for people living within the limits of both villages (and later neighboring communities) to get jobs on their local trains rather than having to come down into town every day for work purposes only

The first white person to enter Rutland was John Winthrop in 1636. The first permanent settler was Nicholas White in 1792. The present day town of Rutland was created from part of the old village of Northfield. Rutland is named after Sir George Monck, 1st Viscount Dunmore, who came to America as an explorationist in 1609 and became governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. He married Lady Margaret Clifford, daughter of William Clifford, 2nd Viscount Chandos, and founded a mansion on the site of what is now Northfield which he called "Monck's Mill". In 1801–02 Lord Dunmore sold his mill to Josiah Quincy for $1,000 (). In 1917 Rutland became one of sixteen communities along with Granville (Ohio), Ipswich (MA), Plattsburgh (NY), Wareham ( MA), Waynesboro (VA), and other small towns around New England to form the newly formed Yankee Section of the National Association for Civic Education (). During World War II many residents took up arms and served in military units such as the Fourth Infantry Division (), Ninth Infantry Division (), Seventh Cavalry Regiment (), First Airborne Division (), Fifth Armored Cavalry Regiment (), Fifteenth Infantry Division (); Eighth Airborne Corps (); Coast Artillery Corps (); Navy Reserve Unit Twenty-Third Naval District (). Most people left after 1945 but a few remain until this day including current Mayor Domenic Sarno .
