Rutland is a town in Rutland County, Vermont, United States. It was founded in 1777 by the merger of two other villages, North and South End. The population was 7,471 at the 2010 census. The village of North End merged with Rutland in 1853 to form the current town. The first settlers were three brothers who arrived from England in 1777 and named their new settlement after their home town: Ipswich, Suffolk. They built a small cabin on an island near the river where they lived until 1779 when they moved upriver to what is now Main Street. They followed the course of the river until they reached what is now Park Road which led them to build their first house on Church Hill in 1780. In 1802, North End merged with Rutland so that all three towns had one commonMayor (George Biddle). This gave each town its own post office which continued until 1903 when it was combined into one office under one Mayor-elect (George Waddell). Rutland saw heavy military action during World War II as part of the Allied effort against Nazi Germany; during that time it became known as "The Town That Took On Hitler." In 1945, following World War II's end, Rutland experienced a rapid growth due to newly opened businesses and residential development; by 1950 it had become one of America's most populous towns. The population peaked at 11,500 in 1960 but has decreased steadily over the years due to migration and natural attrition from various factors such as economic decline and changing demographics within Vermont. However, recent growth has begun to revive interest in living here and there are plans for further expansion including annexation of adjacent townships
Rutland, Vermont was founded in 1677 by John Rutland. The town is named after the River Rutland, which flows through it. It became a state capital in 1781 and is the home of the Vermont Statehouse.
