In 1814, when Burlington County was created from parts of five earlier townships, Rutland became one of its constituent townships. During World War I, Rutland organized itself into two companies: 4th Infantry Battalion (1915-1918), which served in France; and 2nd Armored Battalion (1917-1920), which served in Europe and America respectively. After the war ended, many veterans returned home and started businesses such as grocery stores and meatpacking plants; however, few residents chose to return to their original occupations because they found opportunities more plentiful in bigger cities or because they preferred smaller communities with more personal contacts than those available at rural villages like RutLAND
