This event served as a pretext for British forces led by Major General David Hunter to attack and burn down many Indian villages along the river valley. The town was platted in 1825 by some of Rutter's descendants following his death that year while on an expedition upriver from Quebec City with others including Nathan Hale and Jared Sparks. In 1865, Rutland became one of nine townships (later counties) within Chittenden County when it was organized from parts of five other townsships: Burlington Township (now Arlington), Canaan Township (now West Hero), East Fayette Township (now South Hero), North Hero Township (now North Burlington), and Westford Township (now Waitsfield). The township boundaries changed again in 1898 when Hartford County was created from most of Chittenden County including Rutland Township via creation of two new townships: Starksboro-Brighton Beach and Waterville-Lafayette Hill. The population growth rate throughout much of Chittenden County during this time ranged between 1% and 5%. However, due to subdivision pressures initiated by developers during World War II – which led to increased traffic on main streets – Rutland's population peaked at 3,783 in 1950 before slowly declining until reaching 2,890 at the 2010 census. While single-family homes remain dominant throughout much of downtown Rutland – with only a minority being used for residential purposes – apartment buildings have become more common throughout central Vermont; however they continue to be outnumbered by traditional farmhouses within rural neighborhoods such as those around historic plantations such as those near Lyndon State Park or White Sands Lake outside town limits where hunting still takes place today despite stricter regulations enacted after Repeal Day fireworks season began federally across all states last year!
