Rutland is a town in Rutland County, Vermont, United States. The population was 5,859 at the 2010 census. The town straddles the border of Rutland and Addison counties. The first settlements in what became Rutland were made on the east side of the Connecticut River by English settlers in 1636 and 1637. In 1724, Samuel Smith founded a small trading post on the west side of the river. By 1730, Smith had organized a township within Rutland Township. The first road that crossed through town was called "The Wilderness Road." In 1812, General William Tecumseh Sherman's army invaded New York from the south and reached Burlington Heights before retreating to Minnesota. For three days between December 12 and 14th, Sherman's forces burned townships along the east bank of the river opposite Burlington Heights including Smith's village of Westfield (now part of Burlington). A school was built in 1832 on land donated by Revs John Richardson and John Tuttle. That same year saw an influx of refugees from Great Britain after riots broke out there over parliamentary reform proposals that George Washington favored. Over 1,000 British immigrants arrived in Rutland during this time period; most settled around Church Street where they erected their homes orchards and began their own businesses which survive to this day as local enterprises such as Carpenters' Hall & Warehouse (opened 1913), Judd Brothers Brewery (originally established 1865), Cummings Millinery Mills (founded 1889), The Grapeseed Company (founded 1912) provide much needed employment for locals today while also preserving some traditional aspects of British culture like Sunday evening services at St Johns Anglican Church featuring tea-time readings from Shakespeare productions staged inside her beautiful church building - one example among many! “As early as 1636 English Settlers had come to what became RUTLAND on both sides of THE CTRAINED WATER which linked them with ENGLAND…Ezekiel Webster came here about 1641 with his family….They took up a farmstead near present DAY RANDOLPH STREET but soon left because there was no water then…..They returned about 1700 when they got possession OF A FARM ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE CTRAINED WATER…….. samuel smith came here in 1724….he started out very Poor but gradually got richer until he built himself A house WHICH STANDS TODAY NEAR WHERE PASTOR JOHN RICKARDS HOUSE HAD BEEN BUILT ABOUT 1800….. AND SO DID JAMES TUTLE….JOHN RICKARDS LOT WAS SOLD TO SAMUEL SMITH FOR $2 BLOCK(S) IN APRIL OF 1730…….. BUT EARLIER THAT YEAR SAMUEL SMITH SOLD HIS LOT TO PATRICK BROWN FOR $4 BLOCKS” When Congress passed an act establishing Vermont on July 15, 1804年，Rutland became part of VT when it absorbed neighboring Randolph Township…At this time there were only 4 settler families living here according to Historian Edwin Howe: “On JULY 15TH 1804 congress authorized all new states to be formed so we have OUR STATE NAME “VERMONTERY” BECAUSE WE ARE NOW ALL VIRGINIA RESIDENTS WITHOUT ANY HISTORY OF SETTLING HERE BEFORE” And so it continued until 1861 when NEW YORK COUNTIES INCLUDING RUTLAND TOWNSHIP ADJUDICATED THEIR OWN COUNTY SYSTEM WITH ADDITIONAL COUNTY LINES ACROSS THE COUNTRY……………………………………….. Rutland was first settled in the early 1600s by farmers and their families. The town began to grow rapidly after it was annexed by Burlington in 1836. In 1860, Rutland became the capital of Vermont. It remained as the state's capital until 1975. Since then, Burlington has been its primary city.
