The growth of West Valley City continued until 1861 when it was destroyed by an earthquake which caused major damage to the townscape. After the quake, no new settlers were willing to move into what was now called "destroyed" territory so the town slowly wound down over the next few years. In 1865-1867, while still living in "destroyed" territory due to lack of eligible applicants from outside of Salt Lake City who wanted to move there after being displaced by building construction projects in downtown Salt Lake City - residents voted on whether or not they would rejoin the city proper (which they did). In 1870-71 following a referendum vote conducted by citizens within their own city limits - West ValleyCity became an annexation of Salt Lake City becoming one itself with all its rights and privileges including representation on council as well as voting rights for members thereof without having to go through another election process like those used for annexation into larger cities such as Denver or San Francisco (thus making it one municipality rather than two separate municipalities). This annexation effectively ended decades-long efforts by some residents within South Park Township - east OF downtownSalt Lake CITY - unsuccessfully trying to gain equal representation on council as well as full access to all public resources like streetlights and sewers within their own township despite suffering significant financial losses from those initiatives during past waves of annexation attempts; though this attempt may have technically been successful if not for legal challenges currently pending before Utah's 3rd District Court regarding similar efforts made recently against Aspen Heights Village annexed into Denver). After the war ended, many people left Mormonism because it did not support communism or atheism. Many people also left when policies changed that allowed homosexuals to be ordained as priests within the LDSChurch and polygamy became illegal again in 1978. Today, West Valley City is home to about 14% of all residents who identify as Mormonalthough this number has decreased over time due to population growth elsewhere in Utahand 7%of all residents who identify as Atheist or agnostic . West Valley City experienced some major changes during its history. For example, although polygamy was outlawed after 1978, women still played an important role within LDSChurch membership through Relief Society and Primary societies . Today there are few gay couples living outsideof their homesstoomy being one such change which has helped bring much needed diversityto this largely conservative city
