On November 14, 2008, West Valley City Mayor Donny Young announced the city would be taking possession of a Glock 19 handgun that had been confiscated from an individual who had been convicted of a felony. In March 2008 Mayor Joyce Slatkin announced that she would not seek re-election because she felt her policies were getting too much media attention contrary to what she saw as more important problems such as traffic congestion on State Street and lack of affordable housing options on Easton Drive; Slatkin later said that her decision was based on her belief that homeless people were using State Street as an unofficial dumping ground rather than going into better neighborhoods because they could not afford homes there anymore. New mayor John Deere announced his plans in late 2009 to change some of those policies starting with increasing citizen input before any new zoning changes are made; this will allow more density but also reduce commute times from downtown Salt Lake City by creating bike lanes between Main Street and South Temple Street (currently only one lane exists), widening sidewalks along main thoroughfares throughout town center, implementing green roofs/wetlands on many buildings including city hall, removing Restrictions on Homebuilders' Density which have discouraged development near churches & schools

West Valley City's growth continued during World War II as the military base nearby attracted many residents to work in munitions factories and other wartime industries. After the war ended, West Valley City became an agricultural center with tens of thousands of acres of farmland. In recent years, however, much development has occurred around the downtown core including the construction of several new restaurants and bars along Main Street which has led to a decrease in business activity overall within the city limits. The original town site was located on what is now North Bend Drive between State Route 11 and South Kirkland Road. When it first sprang up as a farming community on the east side of Clear Creek River in 1872, Captain James W. West named his settlement after himself – West Valley City would be its nucleus for many years to come. The small town quickly grew thanks to its close proximity to two large military installations – Fort Douglas on one side of town and Rice Army Airfield west across Interstate 15 on the other – both were important during World War II because they were home to numerous munitions manufacturing plants and other wartime industries that employed many local residents throughout the war years. During World War II, when Fort Douglas became American Forces Station Kaneohe Bay and Rice Army Airfield became American Forces Base Hawaii Kairotoku-O-Haupt Field due to their strategic importance as airfields leading into Midway Island from Oahu), West Valley City experienced rapid growth that outstripped even neighboring towns such as Cottonwood Heights or Loganville due to its strategic location within reach both militarily and economically by providing access not only for soldiers stationed at both facilities but also for civilians who worked in those facilities - something that had never been possible beforeWWII thanks largely to advances made in transportation technology during WWII such as airplane flight paths being determined by computer models rather than guesswork
