West Valley City is west of the Wasatch Front and east of downtown Salt Lake City. West Valley City was founded in 1878 by George Atherton and his wife Emma as a station on the Butterfield Overland Mail route from Nauvoo to St. George. The town quickly became known as "The Gateway to the West" because it lay at the intersection of two major mail routes linking Central America with California and points north. In 1903, when Utah State Route 6 was established through central Utah, West Valley City became its terminus, supplanting nearby Provo as one of only a few cities in Utah to have its own state highway system. In 1968, Brigham Young University (BYU) purchased land adjacent to what is now downtown West Valley City for use as an agricultural research center that would become known as BYU-West Valley Center. That same year, WVC also annexed neighbouring Sandyville and Parkerville areas; these annexations are still in effect today despite having no legal effect because they were done without voter approval or consent from either community's residents. In 1984, WVC annexedyet another area – this time Highland Heights – after voters approved an annexation proposal that had been flawed in several ways including failing to take into account local opposition to the idea among some residents who lived near where their homes would be situated within WVC boundaries but did not actually live within them anymore due to moving away or dying young. In 1931, Mormon pioneers led by Orson Pratt moved to what is now Draper because they felt it would be more difficult to find water supplies near their new settlement on the Great Salt Lake than it would be to build a town on top of an salt mine that had been abandoned since long ago. When it opened in 1931, Zion National Park was one of only a few national park experiences accessible to all Americans regardless of race or religion - even though it was then part of Mexico! Today there are more than 22 million people living within its boundaries - making it one of America’s most diverse national parks! Many aspects about life here during those days were unique for Mormons: polygamy still allowed for multiple husbands; fast families marched five miles each day to Temple Square for religious services; men could own no property other than a horse or mule; women cooked all meals while their husbands worked outside (and often did so inside tents); children attended school until 2pm every day; 7 years old could start working at age 10 if they were able to do any kindOf work (including picking flowers!). It wasn't easy being Mormon pioneer 007... but with hard work and faith you made something beautiful out of very little!
