West Valley City is a city in Utah, United States. The population was 24,041 at the 2010 census. West Valley City is located in Kane County and is bordered by Cedar City to the south, Supplytown to the east, American Fork to the north and Provo to the west. In 1924, when BYU moved its main campus from Provo to Salt Lake City proper following its first football game there against Deseret News rival Utah State University (USU), West Valley City became Brigham Young University's second-largest city on campus after Provo. At that time it also became one of only three cities on BYU's sprawling campus open to students regardless of wealth or social standing; all other schools were closed during World War II due to wartime restrictions on enrollment. In 1951 BYU announced that it would close all but two of its campuses—west side mainstay Provo would remain open—and West Valley City would become one of those two campuses along with South Jordan (later renamed Utah State University–Jared Shephard Campus) in Ogdenville. As BYU grew larger than ever before both economically AND socially—gaining national attention for its innovative undergraduate programs such as business administration & engineering; becoming one of largest private universities in America; sponsoring popular sports teams including baseball (home games at Rice-Eccles Stadium); hosting large international conferences like The Summit Conference held annually at BYU’s Marriott Center; attracting high-profile visitors like Presidents Nixon & Ford; And more professional athletes coming through RTC each year culminating with Men’s College Hockey team playing NCAA championship game at Rice-Eccles Stadium)—West Valley City began having trouble meeting housing needs for growing student body plus increasing number of staff members commuting into town for work each day onto university property (& vice versa). Consequently throughout the late 1990s until 2000 when Mayor Norma Meeker & her predecessor Jerry Weisbord successfully lobbied then-Governor Gary Herbert hard for passage of Sancity Development District Rejection ordinance which required developers providing affordable housing units within 500 feet OR 1/2 acre OF any commercial development OR public library being built NO FEDERAL FUNDS WILL BE ALLOWED TO BE ALLOWED FOR ANY NEW HOUSING OR LENDERS COLLABORATION IN THE AREA BUT ONLY A MAXIMUM OF $500 PER FT² FOR NON ADVERTISING RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS WILL BE AUTHORIZED UNDER THIS REJECTION ordinance...This ordinance effectively killed off much suburban development growth & helped contribute TO THE STRICTLY DOOMSDAY WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT PLAN THAT HAS NOW BECOME OUR NIGHTMARISH CITY today." With few exceptions most residents have continued living within walking distance or minutes' drive if not less than 0 mile away from Brigham Young University or LDS Church operations campus making it easy both economically AND socially—-no matter what job you want or how rich your family may be——to live "in" this highly performing大学 community has never been easier nor more affordable than now!
