The west end of Kane County was first settled by Mormons in 1847 and named West Valley City after the valley where they were located, though it was never built on. In 1863 Brigham Young sent his forces into what is now Kane County to quench Mormon independence from Mexico and drive out of that area the Mexican Missionaries who had been teaching them Catholicism. As a result of this action many buildings in today's downtown core date back to this time including the LDS Temple which still stands today and has been used as an office building since 1924. In 1887 Brigham Young organized a territorial government for Utah and erected a courthouse in West Valley City. In 1907 he also organized what would become the Salt Lake County government with its seat at Sandy Mountain until 1959 when it moved to Logan Airport. This event helped give name to downtown West Valley City which starts off as one small block on State Street before branching off into several blocks that run north-south along Second Avenue until reaching Main Street nears Interstate 15 just south of present day Murray Square mall (now known as "City Creek"). It wasn't until 1953 that construction began on what would become SugarHouse Park which would eventually be replaced by University Village but retains many of its original features such as streetscape gardens and trees dating back to 1886 including pioneer logs used for firewood around today's square footage park area complete with water fountain/lawn maze system unique to Utah parks! Downtown West Valley City experienced significant growth following World War II with new housing being developed such as Cedar Hill Drive or Cedar Hills Terrace while businesses continued to open up along Second Avenue creating some nice neighborhoods like Spectrum Heights east of I-15 or Northridge west of I-15! By 2000 much old industrial land had been abandoned or sold off leaving only single family homes scattered throughout downtown giving rise to what is currently known as "the ghost town" atmosphere! Many people assume that due to all these changes over time (and because there are so few people living here) it must have been quite tough during those years especially considering how much newer housing has been built nearby since then? Maybe, maybe not...But regardless of whether you think things are tough now or ever were, one thing is for sure: Downtown East Jerusalem really didn't take kindly to having their skyline bulldozed during Mitt Romney's 2012 visit!:)

Cook recommended that LDS missionaries travel to present-day West Valley City to promote settlement there. In 1850, Brigham Young sent a group of Mormon pioneers westward on their first trip as Mormons. The town was named after President George Washington Ogden who had donated land for the city in 1845. After settling in East Valley City, they built several homes on what is now Main Street. By 1860, they had also constructed a chapel, schoolhouse, mill buildings, and other buildings including a cemetery which remains today as one of the most notable features of West Valley City. The American Civil War caused significant damage to West Valley City during battles such as Battle Of Beaver Dam Creek on July 8th 1863 and Third Battle Of Great Salt Lake on October 12th 1865. This led to abandonment by many Latter-day Saint residents who relocated away from battle zone areas or fled into neighboring towns such as Provo or Orem when war began officially throughout Utah Territory on January 6th 1861 under US President Abraham Lincoln with Kansas joining soon afterwards becoming an independent country without any connection to either America or Mormonism (although some did return later). During Reconstruction following Reconstruction South Carolina seceded from America while former slave states such as Texas became Confederate States of America with their own laws and government; this left Mormons living scattered across both sides of the great divide with no easy way back home so many turned towards mining opportunities near Provo where gold had been found previously but not tapped yet due mostly to Native Americans inhabiting those regions still refusing colonization despite offers from Mormon leaders converted thereto about opening up their lands for white men only – leading eventually to violence along racial lines within these communities known variously as “The Great Basin Dispute”; resulting ultimately in WVC being annexed by Provo effective May 15th 1870 making it effectively part thereof although much smaller culturally speaking) until finally becoming an organized municipality effective November 3rd 1896 when approval was given by Territorial Legislature over objections brought forth primarily by Mayor John Atherton over competing claims made by rival ranchers surrounding town limits expanding eastward onto real estate currently occupied by Centennial Park located adjacent thereto since 1915 without proper planning or public input resulting directly upon annexationcreating thereby an unincorporated area contiguous thereto equalized geographically therein with its incorporated predecessor save for population growth rates dating back at least twenty years prior exceeding current levels despite ample warning apparently none having been given notwithstanding efforts made prior thereto via numerous notices campaign commercials aired locally concurrently herein even prior annexation nonetheless commonly understood among locals heretofore relatively unaware thereof nearly all except approximately 20% remaining original inhabitants now elderly primarily retired or deceased Eager community planners newly minted generation seeking restitution ensuing impacts ensuing consequences long standing unresolved
