West Valley City is a city in Utah, United States. The population was 20,317 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Carbon County. West Valley City was founded in 1876 by pioneers who had come from Salt Lake City and were driving sheep and cattle to market. The original town site was on what is now North Temple Street and Weber Boulevard. beginnings The townsite for West Valley City was selected because it had a dry climate that would allow woolen fabrics to be produced efficiently, as well as a location away from navigational hazards in the Wasatch mountains. The town's first store opened its doors on October 15, 1876. At that time, there were just two other settlements in Carbon County- Lee’s Ferry and Cottonwood- both located near the Wasatch Mountains National Park. A group of men from Provo organised themselves into a Company called “The Pioneers” and began searching for suitable land east of Cedar Mesa Dam but found no luck until they discovered an abandoned ranch belonging to George Waddell holdings downstream from present day Cedar Mesa Reservoir north of Indian Wells River). West Valley City was founded in 1847 by Mormon pioneers. The city is the oldest continuously inhabited community in Utah. In the early 1800s, the region around West Valley City was home to a large farming population and there were few settlements other than those near Salt Lake City. The first permanent settler in what is now West Valley City was George Life, who arrived in 1847. At that time, it was part of the Mexican territory of Alta California. In 1853, Brigham Young and his LDS settlers established a ranch at Cedar Mesa which became known as Springdale after Cedar Mesa Creek that ran through it. The town site was chosen because it had an open space with good water resources for irrigation purposes. John Dallin came to Winter Quarters on horseback from central Utah in 1855 and spent winter here before continuing southward to present-day Provo cavalry barracks built about this time. Dallin played an important role in establishing Brigham Young's new kingdom of Deseret as well as helping lead the successful siege of Fort Bridger on November 15,1857 that freed the people ofUtah from General James Woolsey's occupation during their statehood movement led by Woodruff
