West Valley City, Utah is a city in Page County, Utah, United States. The population was 20,297 at the 2010 census. The West Valley City government was created on February 1, 1907 and first met on March 14 that year. The present form of government was adopted on December 21, 2002. It is part of the Salt Lake City–Provo–Orem Combined Statistical Area. The area now known as West Valley City was first inhabited by the Timpanogos who built their settlements around 1275 CE along Mormon Creek. A Spanish mission called Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación (Our Lady of Assistance) was founded in 1847 near what is now Draper or Cedar Hills Village; it closed in 1853 due to lack of support from the LDS Church and Mexican nationals seeking access to American soil began moving into the area. Both missions were abandoned soon after because Brigham Young deemed them too vulnerable to attack by Mexicans raiding for cattle and horses wandering across his lands without permission from him. In 1881 USGS Officer George Gibbs mapped out an area north of Provo Canyon which included what is now West Valley City when he visited Mormon Townsite about 16 miles east of Provo Station where he found evidence that an ancient petroglyphs had been discovered dating back 4500 BCE near Cottonwood Mesa just inside our current boundaries today! He named this new spot "Mormon Townsite" in homage to early pioneers Farnsworth Cleary and Charles W Saintsbury who discovered this same site while exploring approximately 25 miles south of town then eastern side of Cedar Mesa! In 1902 Brigham Young designated what are today North Park and South Park Streets within present day West Valley City limits as "City Centre Boulevard", later renamed Main Street following approval from then Mayor Carlton Mellen and Councilman John Fenton; it became official when sections thereof were surveyed as part of platting for First Ward Comprehensive Plan submitted to the city commission on November 9th, 1912. On September 15th 1912 residents approved annexation by Provo Township with a 3-2 margin over objections from East Valley Club members hearing arguments against annexation including one speaker who noted: "There's plenty enough people here already". By 1923 all but 2 blocks east of Main Street had been annexed becoming parts of South Park Blocks which later became part of North Park Blocks making up downtown core today with only a few exceptions including First Ward Chamber Building located between University Avenue & Main Street remaining unincorporated since its construction in 1925 adjacent to LDS Temple Square – home both then & currently to local governing bodies such as school boards (population varies), police departments (now county-wide), fire departments (now regional services)and two hospitals). For many years until annexation occurred there were no streets connecting downtown cores east & west - instead citizens would walk/run through residential areas producing “streets” consisting mainly residences & businesses facing arterial streets only occasionally intersecting main thoroughfares creating more chaos than clarity resulting frequently in street closures caused by heavy traffic congestion (& sometimes fires) during rush hours !! This finally ended when annexation created several “downtown sides” or parallel strips running perpendicular/opposite Main Streets extending northeast/southwest(& eventually terminating at I-15) providing easy access via exits into north/northwest suburbs (& also outside inner city limits) rendering much needed structured gridlock obsolete !! Well worth every penny taxpayers paid for !! Today’s residents continue this rich heritage thru continued community development initiatives including original plans for mixed use buildings surrounding lakefront waterfront promenade featuring views overlooking bothenseriverside&PromontoryValley interiors !!!

The English explorer George Vancouver explored the area in 1795 and called it "Wadi al-Salt" or "Valley of the Salt Lakes." In 1847, Brigham Young founded the LDS Church in this area. The region became a stop on the Mormon Trail following Utah's admission into the United States in 1850. In 1857, Gold was discovered at Sipple River and soon after other mines were discoveries throughout what is now West Valley City. Mining began here extensively during much of the 19th century and until about 1880 there was an active gold industry in this part of Utah. This led to heavy population growth in West Valley City over time, which has lead to some environmental issues as well as increased traffic congestion.
