West Jordan, Utah is a town in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,962 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salt Lake City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit West Jordan was Lewis and Clark during their expedition of 1806-1807. After Adams's purchase of the site from the Kansa people in 1847, settlers began arriving in increasing numbers and by 1860 there were over 200 families living in the area. A post office called "Walden" was established in 1865, but it failed to take off and was discontinued in 1870. In 1888 a group of men organized what became known as "The Gilded Age Pioneers," who bought land around present day West Jordan and platted what would become townicenters on behalf of themselves and others within their circle of friends and family. By 1893 the population had grown to 2,500 residents when an irrigation system was built that allowed for commercial farming near present day South Temple Valley Elementary School. The townsite designation came about due to attempts by representatives from both Kane County (west side) and Salt Lake City (east side) to get a united name for their respective areas which did not mesh well together geographically or culturally speaking: both Kane County wanted "Utah" while Salt Lake City wanted something more specific such as "West Jordan." In 1906 entrepreneur Wm Henson donated land east of town lines on either side of Brigham Young Drive (now State Street) so that construction could begin on a shopping center anchored by Hecht's department store which opened its doors on July 15th 1908 named after Mr. Henson himself with funds raised by local civic leaders including Mayor George Quesnel who declared, "This new city will be one all through; every man who votes here will help make it so."
