In 1909, multi tool manufacturing began in West Jordan when a group of businessmen purchased a old sawmill from John C. Bechtel. West Jordan, Utah is a town in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 7,032 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salt Lake City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of West Jordan begins with pioneers who arrived in the early 1800s to settle what is now Kane County. In 1847, Brigham Young and his followers founded the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and soon afterwards began to build a new city called Nauvoo on the east side of the Great Salt Lake. When it was discovered that gold could be found in nearby Anza-Borrego Desert and also in neighboring Weber County, Mormons built an elaborate irrigation system to sustains their crops while mining for gold. As production became more widespread and ore prices dropped after 1850, some Mormons abandoned Nauvoo for what would become West Jordan – one of only a handful western towns established outside of Mormon settlements during that period. The first permanent settler in what would eventually become West Jordan was John Davenport in 1868. By 1888, when its boundaries were drawn along State Street from Farmington allthe way to Fairview Heights, West Jordan had about 1,000 residents and consisted largely of small farms scattered throughout rural Kane County. A few years later Kirtland Temple (now LDS Church headquarters) opened on Jackson Avenue just north of town proper and neighborliness quickly grew among pioneer families as missionaries attracted large numbers of converts to The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). West Jordan, Utah is a town in Davis County, Utah, United States. The population was 4,811 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Ogden–Clearfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become West Jordan was John C. Fremont on February 14, 1847. He and his family camped near what is now called "Fremont Park" on Wacoma Creek west of present-day downtown West Jordan. Brigham Young came to visit Fremont on April 6, 1847 and referred to Fremont's location as "a pleasant spot." On July 16, 1850, Brigham Young issued a warrant for the arrest of David Whitmer for stealing horses from Joseph Smith's barn in Midvale Township. Whitmer was residing in Sandy Valley at that time and had been living with his parents since December 8th of that year when he left for Missouri with some companions to join Smith's company in the Salt Lake Battalion under Colonel Cumming. When they arrived in Winter Quarters on January 24th of 1851 there were only fourteen men present including Whitmer and four women plus two children who accompanied them; all but one (the mother) went back home after their arrival because they were not wanted by either Mormons or military authorities.
