Since the 1800s, West Jordan, Utah has been a place where people have fought and died for their right to bear arms. In 1856, the first gunfight in Utah took place at Cedar Mesa between Mormons and government forces. The Mormons were using shotguns to shoot at the government soldiers, but one shot killed two of the soldiers and wounded three others. This was the beginning of a long-running battle that would eventually lead to the admission of Utah as a state in 1912. From then on, gunfights continued to take place throughout Utah Territory and even into Oregon. In 1882, an army detachment under General George Armstrong Custer attacked a Mormon encampment near Cedar City. After hours of combat, twenty men from Custer's unit were killed and thirty-six wounded by Mormons who had hidden behind rocks in order to fire on passing troops. In 1898, another military engagement took place when President William McKinley was traveling through Utah Territory on his way to campaign for reelection. A group of Mormon militants ambush McKinley's convoy while he is traveling around Promontory Point National Monument northwest of Salt Lake City. Five people are killed including McKinley himself before he can be safe. The fight leads to increased tensions between LDS Church members and federal officials over control of firearms within the territories

The history of West Jordan can be traced back to 1847 when Daniel Hanks and his family started farming there. In 1865, Brigham Young founded the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) in West Jordan and it remained an LDS Church parish until 1953 when it became a separate municipality. In 1907, work began on what would become Utah State Capitol building in West Jordan. The cornerstone was laid on October 15 that year by then-Gov. Heber Cushman and Mayor John Fenton with President Theodore Roosevelt presiding over the event. For many years, this was home to the state capitol's art department where beautiful pieces were created by local artists such as Alice Paulrer and Harry Blackmun.
