West Jordan began as a small post office on December 12, 1871, when it was founded by George W. Smith and David Bitton. The name honor John C. In 1916, Cedar City joined Kanesville as part of a merger which created the independent city of Kanesville; however remains within Ogden County until today because its charter requires representation in county meetings even though its population lies outside of Olathe Township boundaries The first store on Main Street opened in 1899 when Jno Haggerty started selling groceries from his home on First Street between Second and Third Streets. A grocery store followed soon after on Fourth Street between Second and Third Streets with Gussie Moran becoming proprietor in 1902 In 1924 George Pemberton established a dairy farm near present day Cottonwood Heights which became known as Pemberton's Dairy & Creamery . The property now includes a shopping mall called Northridge Shopping Center adjacent to Interstate 80 southbound exit 5A or I-80 eastbound exit 5B . In 1948 Sperry Corporation started manufacturing Tilt-A-Whirl products at their factory north of present day Cottonwood Heights . That same year West Jordan voters approved annexation into Salt Lake City through an act passed by the Utah Legislature based on proposal by then Mayor Wayne Morse This annexation created more than doubled our population to 20,000 people making us one of the fastest growing cities ever! With strong economic growth came increased social services for citizens including libraries, school systems etc.; also new housing developments such as Maple Grove/Upper Arlington/Cedar Hills west side; Willowbrook/Alta Mesa east side; Pioneer Valley west side with spacious open yards for community events complete with tennis courts and playgrounds
